 o
Dublin Bay versus Etoile de Hollande

Hello -- I am looking for a deep red climber to grow up a wide, wall- sized trellis on my roof deck in zone 6 (lots of sun, but it can get windy at times).

These roses seem similar in color, size and type and I was wondering what the main differences are? Is it the vigorousness of growth? I've read that the Dublin Bay can be a sluggish grower in some areas. Which would be best for my situation?

I think Etoile de Hollande would be a more vigorous grower as it can get quite large. Dublin Bay is a little more mannerly but can still spread quite a bit.
While I have little trouble keeping my Dublin Bay in bounds it sends out some really long canes. It is always in bloom throughout the summer and into fall.
Etoile de Hollande would be more fragrant if that's a requirement.

Thank you! I was leaning toward the Etoile, so that is very helpful. Do you know if it is disease resistant and hardy in my zone?

Etoile de Hollande will mildew. Both are listed as hardy to zone 6.
My Dublin Bay dies back to 2-3 feet each spring but comes back quickly and strong by early July. It's disease free all summer with no fungicide spraying and it does all this in partial shade.

I don't know about how they would perform in your zone, but here in the PNW they are both fairly healthy roses. Dublin Bay is definitely more mannerly in growth habit. while Etoile is a huge monster here, sending out 15' canes in all directions, and so needs more tying in and pruning, but the fragrance is delicious. Dublin Bay has more continuous blooms, but no fragrance. Etoile has reasonably good rebloom, 2 good flushes with intermittent roses between.
