Prunibg Tea roses

When is the best time to do this - spring or fall.

We live in a cold zone.

I bought this bush this past spring and it has been beautiful but the lower part of all the branches have no leaves., and haven't had, most of the summer but the blooms have been big and beautiful. I don't understand this.

I read one time that you prune tea roses in one season and climbing ones in the other but don't remember which is which

Do you know the name of your rose? Is it really a "tea" rose (which usually only like to grow in warm climates), or is it a "hybrid tea" rose?

If you can tell us the name, or post a picture of it, we can help you.

Even without the name (all though that would certainly help) I can tell you that in your zone you should not prune in the fall. You want to leave the energy it has stored in the canes for the winter so it can come back in the spring.

That being said, without knowing what rose it is, and whether or not it's a once bloomer, I can't tell you when in the spring to prune it. If it is a repeat blooming rose it should probably be pruned in the early spring when it starts to leaf out. Think when the forsythias bloom in your area. If it is a once bloomer it should NOT be pruned until immediately AFTER it finishes blooming, whether that's the end of June or early to mid July.

I don't have the name but believe it is probably a hybrid tea rose. It has flowered since spring. When one bloom was starting to go, I cut it off and in no time there was another one came from new growth where I had cut it off. Very beautiful. I don't have a pic.

As soon as you can in the spring before the new growth starts and then probably one more time. For me in CT it was mid-March.
