Twilight Zone 2012 - first year observations

I've been growing this rose in a pot, which only gets about 4 hours of sun a day. Under these conditions, and being a first year rose I just wanted to post my observations, and would like anyone else to chime in that is growing it as well.
-for being in partial shade, it has grown and bloomed quite well.
-foliage is nice and healthy
-fragrance is strong and pleasing when bathed in sun
-for me, the blooms are more magenta, or dark pink. I'm not really a fan of these colors, but I've yet to see a purple rose in my garden (I've grown Ebb Tide as well)
-Aphids love it

The photo below is from my iphone, and it doesn't show the real color I see. Overall it has done very well for its first year. I just wish it wasn't so dark pink. To me, purple is the color of a purple crayon.

I love the color, thanks for the info. I'm glad it does well in partial shade.

I love my Twilight Zone. It's in mostly sun with a little shade from surrounding perennials. It's growing well, so I figure it will be taller than the perennials next year, and the shade will disappear. It has bloomed two or three times (it was planted in March 20012) and is in bloom now. All the blooms have been a wonderful dark purple, darker than my Ebb Tides. Diane

I grew Ebb Tide also thinking it might actually be purple. It wasn't. More of a magenta pink. People in a more mild climate (PNW for instance) say it's purple for them. It also is a question of perception. What I call purple and what someone else calls purple can vary. The picture you show northtexas, is the same shade my Ebb Tide was. Not my definition of purple (yes, I know it's a different rose, but it's still about the same as ET). Diane's picture is closer to purple, but still it's in the deep magenta pink range to my eye. Purple in the crayola lineup is a combination of red and blue. Since roses have no blue in their heritage, it's not likely to come from breeding with another rose. Maybe with another blue flowered plant if they can breed two different species. Just my thoughts on the subject......Maryl

Right after it broke dormency in the spring, it did great! Bloomed nonstop for a couple of months...after that...nothing! I blame it more on the fact that its grafted on Dr. Huey, rather than multiflora, more than anything else. I should know that almost every rose I have grafted on Dr. Huey does the same thing, but I never learn :(

Diane and Tammy, I would be thrilled if my TZ was anywhere near the color of yours! I am really looking forward to next season with this rose to see what it does. I had Ebb Tide for 4 years and it never grew more than 2 feet and only produced a few blooms per season.... but oh, the smell!

I base my perception of purple on the standard I used as a designer--which is Prismacolor purple. I just colored a bit of paper with Prisma purple and it was almost an exact match with my photo. In person my TZ is slightly darker than this photo. Often people, especially in recent years, have started calling something purple that I would call violet which does have a lot more blue in it. I bought 2 TZ's this year and my color is the same as Dianne's. Mine gets full sun with afternoon shade. Gorgeous color and what I call purple, for sure. Gorgeous blooms and I love love love the fragrance. Mine is blooming in clusters right now. I love this rose.
Maybe yours needs a peep more of that hot Texas sun?

This is the color chart I use for colors. Diane's shot of Twilight Zone again, is pretty close to some of the "purples" on the chart. My eyes think of purple in the RHS 83A-D catagory. Everyone perceives color a little differently though. No right or wrong of it, just different....Maryl
