I am looking for some standard rose to block the view of neighbors. It would be idea if they have a big head of leaves. The yellow planter in the background is 20" diameter and 24" tall. Four of them are available for the roses. I am in Palm Spring area, the patio faces south so plenty of sun, all the time. Super hot/dry summer and very warm winter. Any recommendations? |

| 'Sweet Chariot'. I had one in San Diego on a 4' standard and the head was well over 4', but what makes it a wonderful standard is that it has a "weeping" habit and, to my nose, a strong scent. Smiles, |

| And the white -- 'Gourmet Popcorn' will do the same thing. BUT how they will stand up to desert heat is another matter entirely. I strongly recommend you bounce this question off the Desert Rose Society, for local expertise. See link, below. Jeri |

| My sister was in nearby Desert Hot Springs for a time and container gardening was a challenge in summer. The roots in pots cook and plants have a hard time getting enough water in that level of heat. You would need a huge pot to support a big enough head to block the view. I would try a trellis with a bougainvillea or something similar. Potted roses were tricky even in Riverside summers. I'm not saying don't try it, but if I were going to attempt it, I'd get a few really big pots with a drip irrigation kit that I could set to come on a few times in the day and use the big pots to deflect the heat while the actual roses were in slightly smaller pots inside the big ones with some bark between to be an insulator. Winter and spring would be no problem. Summer the plants are going to be challenged. If there was a way to shade the pots/ roots, that would be a great help. |
