Carefree Sunshine and William Baffin

How much winter protection do these need in my zone? These are first year plantings.

Bury the crown?

Wrap the canes?

I do not winter protect and neither suffers appreciable winter damage in my northwest Ohio garden.

I don't know about Carefree Sunshine, but I do know that you don't need to worry about William Baffin. He is as tough as they get. I just planted one this year, and everyone says he can take care of his own and not lose a beat.
No worries :)

Carefree Sunshine is Bill Radler's first yellow. It is hardier than Knockout in my garden and grows to 6 feet tall. I do nothing to Willie B or Carefree Sunshine except let oak leaves collect at their bases. They require little or no pruning in spring.
If planted this past spring they both should be hardy enough to survive with no protection.

I grow both here in Northern Michigan. William Baffin is tough as rocks, although I did protect him his first year, as he was a small ownroot rose. He now tries to eat the rose arbor every year and could probably survive a glacier. Carefree Sunshine is way smaller and not nearly as vigorous. However, it has been hardy for me - just has stayed fairly small.

Carefree Sunshine has grown well for me, perhaps too well. The canes are now really long, I'd like to trim it back in the spring, but not sure how to shape roses. I forget, is this a shrub rose?

My William Baffin has done well for me. My husband looked at it recently (now that it's lost all the foliage) as if it was the first time he's seen it, and said, What's that? Ummmm, it's the rose bush we've had since early spring...it has grown higher than our 4 1/2 foot fence. Can't wait for the plant to mature. What a beautiful specimen.

Carefree Sunshine is a shrub rose. I prune mine back to two feet or less each spring to promote new growth and more flowers. I just cut each cane so they're all of equal length

In my z4a area Wm Baffin needs no protection & C. Sunshine gets a 5 gal pail of wood chips mounded over the crown with nothing else done to it.

I've had a dozen, or so, WB and he needs no winter protection at all.
