"Plant of the week: Rose 'Lady Marmalade' Pumpkin-orange cabbage rose-style blooms made it Rose of the Year 2014"

"What is it? A floribunda rose that looks like an old-fashioned cottage garden dweller, but has the disease resistance you'd expect from a modern rose. The cabbage rose-style blooms are pumpkin-orange, softening to apricot as they mature, and they repeat-flower through summer and early autumn. No wonder it earned the RHS title Rose of the Year 2014.

Plant it with? For a "hot border" look, opt for other cottage garden flowers in oranges, yellows and reds: Verbascum 'Clementine', Crocosmia 'George Davison' and Achillea 'Terracotta' all qualify.

And where? 'Lady Marmalade' is a compact rose with a height and spread of 90cm x 75cm, so should slot nicely in the foreground of a mixed border, given sun and a reasonably fertile soil. It will thrive in a large pot, provided you are diligent with watering and feeding.

Any drawbacks? Like all roses, the tedious task of deadheading is essential if you want to keep the display going for as long as possible.

What else does it do? If deadheading is too dispiriting, reframe the issue. Cut the stems while in bud and bring them indoors to enjoy the spicy scent."
