I'm Back

We are now in Pasadena having bought the house here over a year ago and finally we are about to put in the first rose garden which is to be in the front of the house. It will be a modest garden with only 36 roses all floribundas. All together there will be about 60 roses in front and probably about 40 in back. So I will be back on this forum and any advice about growing roses in southern California is welcome. And we are very close to the Rose Bowl so anyone in the neighborhood should stop by. Look for the house with all the roses. Henry

Welcome back, and get used to gardening 11 1/2 months a year. Enjoy! :)

And get used to MILDEW!

Welcome back, Henry ;-)

All Floribundas?!?! Excellent! I have a special fondness for Floribundas. Will they be Floribundas from all periods, or "classic" Floribundas, or . . . ?

RE: I'm Back

I haven't bought roses for years so I have to look into the newer ones but I suspect most will be my old favorites. I have over 100 floribundas in the garden in CT. Right now the question is where to buy them.

Hello and welcome back, Henry!
We live in the same city--I'm walking distance (okay, long walking distance) from you, south of California Boulevard. Don't know if you've had a chance to shop around for your floribundas yet, but some of our best local rose sources in the Pasadena area include San Gabriel Nursery (about 15 minutes away, but their inventory is impressive), and Armstrong. Burkard's is still considered a Pasadena institution, but it used to be much better than it is now. Up until a few years ago, they put forth a huge bare root offering every January--true bare root, where they wrapped your roses in brown paper and tied them with twine. Alas, they've stopped doing that. As has been the case across the country during the economic downturn, many nurseries have cut back on roses, both in quantity and in variety. I'm including a link to San Gabriel's offerings this year. Have fun shopping!

RE: I'm Back

Hi again...
I'm west AND east of you ;-) Where "we have to work" is near LAX and we are blessed to have a retirement/vacation place east of you on the back side of the San Gabriels. I'd love to share my florabunda experiences with you as well (very under rated on the forum, I think), but I don't see an email address for you. Feel free to email me using mine. Henry do you have a listing on HMF of what you had in CT? If you don't spray, we could help point out any that might be problematic for mildew. Rust is *generally* seasonal, but there are a few that are just hopeless all around.
Cheers,
Kerin

I spray although mildew is not a big deal in CT except for a few like Grenada. How is BannerMaxx on mildew? It absolutely controls BS which is all I've ever had to worry about. We live BTW in Prospect Park on Armada Dr about a 10 minute walk from the Rose Bowl. What a beautiful area. The reason for floribundas is that I'm just trying to maximize bloom and I don't want them to be too big. I'm going for oos and ahs but I don't want to over do it. I have a good list from the San Gabriel nursery which is going to have their bare roots in around Dec 15 and will give me 10 percent off their bare root price and even let me pick them out. No root clipping. I don't think finding enough will be a problem and I'll share the list of my choices if anyone carwes. Henry

I would love to hear what you are going to plant Henry.

RE: I'm Back

Banner Maxx is pretty much useless on Mildew, don't waste your $$$. The fungicide to get is Compass (aka Heritage) if you can afford it. Second best is Clearys 3336. And rotating a few of them is generally a better idea than only using one fungicide all the time.

But Pasadena should not be as bad as the coast, mildew wise, so you might get away with picking plants that are fairly disease resistant (i.e. Julia Child, Hot Cocoa, etc.) and then see if you can do it without spraying altogether, or maybe just spraying when the weather gets damp and cool.

The only one you mentioned, Granada, is a hopeless mildew magnet here, and must be sprayed.

RE: I'm Back

By all means, Henry, please let us know what your choices are. Among floribundas, three that seem to do well for most folks in our neck of the woods are Belinda's Dream (pink), Bolero (white), and Julia Child (butter yellow). All are fragrant. Julia has perhaps a special appeal because she was born here in Pasadena.

PS: When my daughter was younger, I was on your street every day, dodging feral peacocks on the way to Chandler School.

RE: I'm Back

I've been going through lists of floribundas trying to get a balanced mix of colors and it isn't as easy as you would think. It is amazing how many floribundas are orange or some combination of orange/yellow/red/pink and how few except the mauve/purples have fragrance. I'm thinking about mixing in a few short HT's like Chrysler that have good fragrance. I want the garden in front to have enough fragrance so that people walking by can smell the roses.

RE: I'm Back

What a lovely thought for people in your neighborhood! The fragrance from your roses will be like a gift to the street.

RE: I'm Back

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but with our dry air here out west, rose fragrances do not "waft" like they do where there is more humidity. Fragrance is always good, but you visitors will have to stick their noses in your roses to smell the scents of them here.

For gifts to the neighorhood, it would probably be better to choose roses that are healthy, hearty blooming fools. The three suggested are good ones, and I would add something like Playboy, Playgirl, Ketchup & Mustard, Disneyland Rose, Shockwave, The Charlatan and maybe Lovestruck to those.

 o
RE: I'm Back

Manoman -- Playboy and Playgirl were mildew magnets up here, near the coast -- unless sprayed regularly. In Pasadena --- YMMV.
