I'm considering a couple of new roses to my collection in No. Ca. (Sonoma Valley, USDA 9, very hot summers and teens in winter), namely Midas Touch and Moonstone? Any thoughts on these?

I have not grown Midas Touch, but HMF says it is good in zones "7b and higher", which is a good hint that it likes warm climates like ours (I am in Central Marin). HMF also says it is very disease resistant. So, if I were you, I would give it a try. Moonstone is also rated by HMF for 7b and higher, and it says "prefers dry climates", which I would interpret as not humid, with dry Summers which you certainly have. They both sound like good ones to try in Sonoma. Jackie

I have both. We have (normally) fairly wet early springs and super hot summers, often weeks in the low 100s. MIDAS TOUCH, for me, does very well. No disease, average repeat; grows to 5ft high by about 3-4ft wide. Blooms are not very often perfect exhibition-style spirals, but are very lovely. Color holds pretty well even in the high temps. MOONSTONE is a gorgeous rose, but the wet springs cause the early blooms to be rather ugly. The plant will be mildewed and/or B/S'd for the first few months until the warm temps come in and burn it off. Once summer is here, the blooms generally are huge and gorgeous. It definitely doesn't like moist air. And unless you spray, it can be a thrips magnet. But most white roses are anyway.

Moonstone has many virtues: great vigor, strong straight stems, and excellent bloom productivity. On the minus side, it gets terrible Rust, has zero fragrance, and a tendency to split centers (spoiling the perfection of the form).
