Now I'm Angry (Post blocked by ad)

Now this has gone too far. I opened up the post about "Where's Ferox" which brought up pop-ups for Target that made it almost impossible to read. There was no place to click off the ad. When I went to the reply box and clicked there it simply brought up the ad page. There was no way even to reply. This stuff is really offensive.

Funny. I don't get that stuff, even on my tablet.

I would participate in GW more often if there was a "pay to opt out of ads" option. It gets worse with every year.

RE: Now I'm Angry (Post blocked by ad)

I haven't seen an ad in more than 5 years.

It's hard to believe it is at all good business to push people to block all ads, and lose the eyeballs, than to make sure all ads are well behaved, tolerable little objects.

The reason there is no place to click to close the ad is because it has opened a separate window (or tab, depending on which browser you use, and the settings on that). Just close the whole page where the ad is, and your original page that you were trying to get to will still be there.

Firefox with Adblock. No ads! No pop-ups!

I second Hoovb -- Firefox with Adblock.
NO ADS.
NO POPUPS.

But I also agree with MadGallica, who says she does not understand why advertisers would think it is effective to SO annoy potential customers that they hide everything. No more do I understand why Telephone Marketers think it would be effective to repeatedly call people who have put themselves on the Do Not Call list.

Why would they not understand that all they're doing is annoying the potential customer, and losing all good will they might have had?

I am not much bothered by ads although I use Safari. But all I see are Swedish ads which astonishes me when I happen to see them, very rarely. I am so tuned in to English on this forum that the Swedish doesn't register.

Usually there is just some little thing that i can get rid of. This is the first time it's been that bad.

RE: Now I'm Angry (Post blocked by ad)

We could start a 'do not buy' thread for offensive popups.

Chrome with Adblock.

I had that problem yesterday with another ad. Drove me nuts! I thought that ad had taken over GW. I already use Firefox and took Hoovb's suggestion and added Adblock. So far so good....

I haven't had that happen but I have had the big wide stripe show up and block the whole page. Only way to get rid of it is hit back and start over.

Doesn't have to be Google Chrome to install Adblock. I use Firefox, and Adblock works great. Those big cover-everything ads used to drive me batty. All better now.

RE: Now I'm Angry (Post blocked by ad)

Since I installed Adblock on my Firefox, I haven't seen an ad here or anywhere else! I have a couple of online games I like to play, and used to get ads all the time. Haven't seen one since installing Adblock! Thank you, Firefox!!!

I feel the same way. But if they have a "close" or exit, etc., and you click it, they may enter your system, and start sending you ads at home. No can always mean yes when it comes to these ads.

Febreeze is the one that got me. Do they really think I will have warm and fuzzy feeling for them when they keep me from reading what I want? Ha! I can buy another product that has respect for me.

I also use Firefox with Adblocks and haven't had an annoying ad since. Those things drove me crazy and I would always say those are the very products I wouldn't buy. Fortunately there is a way to get rid of them and what a relief that is.

Thank you guys so much for recommending Ad Block with Firefox. I had been using IE popup blocker - did not block ads at all, but would prevent me from clicking on any links - very useful!

I've just downloaded Ad Block, and looking at this pages with no ads - popups or on side panel, is heaven. Now I just hope they don't figure out a way around Ad Block anytime soon...

I don't remember who the original poster was who recommended Ad Block, but for me, that person was Santa. Ad Block was the best Early Xmas prezzie I got this year. Sometimes the best gift is the solving of a problem, or the removal of an annoyance or difficulty, rather than the addition of more stuff.

RE: Now I'm Angry (Post blocked by ad)

I am on Firefox now, and started with a couple of ads, but they disappeared. I hate to start something new, but if I become accustomed to this, it might be better than Internet Explorer.

When we purchased this computer, we had the company set it up for us. I was told that systems that block the ads can sell my information to "trusted vendors" -- that is how they operate for free. I gave the man the name of the ones I had been using, and he went into the small print of what I had signed, and showed me where I agreed to allow him to sell our information. He said that signing that agreement was probably what lead to our receiving whatever it was that messed up our computer.

I really wish I understood this stuff.

I am afraid when I should be confident, and confident when I should watch out. There is so much to learn.

This is my preview, and Febreze just flashed at me again, and blocked the screen.

Don't worry about Ad Block. I've had it for years back when it worked only with Firefox, and there has never been a problem. To my knowledge, via computer engineer son in law, it works with all browsers. I have no problem with my personal info being sold to other vendors because of Ad Block, either. I've been touting it for ages on the Forum. Diane

Yes, AD BLOCK works with ALL browsers. It isn't Foxfire that is stopping the ads--it is AD BLOCK.

On my computer I added AD BLOCK to my IE browser. Works perfect. Whatever browser you are presently using, just ad AD BLOCK.

RE: Now I'm Angry (Post blocked by ad)

Indeed, and it is HEAVEN. I've been using IE for the gardenweb forum as I use IE's ability to resize the screen larger - I use it at 125% as my screen resolution is pretty tiny, and gardenweb type is especially small. When I added Ad Block to Firefox I couldn't stand the smaller type and found Ad Block for IE. Works just as well. Since they are browser add-ons, they do have separate downloads for each different browser, so you must download the appropriate one per browser. If you don't yet have it, just google Ad Block and the browser you want it for, and it'll come right up. Press download, and follow instructions, and then after it's installed it'll ask you if you want to add it to that browser. It's very simple.
