I refrigerate and save used coffee grounds as a habit. I used them once every couple of months around my roses. I know they add a small amount of nitrogen to the soil. Can I use them this late in the year, or would it be like putting down fertilizer? andrea

They probably won't break down very fast, but otherwise I doubt it would be an issue. My roses are actively growing and blooming right now and aren't going to slow down until late January, if at all. The only time I don't fertilize is in July and August, when I want them to take a break and not push unattractive, washed out blooms.

Used coffee grounds in the fridge? Oh my! You have entirely too much fridge space, apparently. Just go toss them out in the yard when you have them -- as soon as the coffee is done and the used grounds cooled off.. The fridge is an unnecessary pit stop. (It's actually part of my morning routine to say good morning to the roses with the grounds from that day given to whichever rose is pleasing me that day -- they compete, lol).

I would think that coffee grounds would be considered compost not fertilizer. Most everything I've read has said that using compost is something you can do all year long. In a colder climate than you, I put a couple inches and compost topped by a couple inches of mulch in late fall after several hard freezes to put my gardens to bed for the winter.

For some reason, this idea appeals to me. I have used coffee grounds all spring and summer but stopped due to the earthworms attracting moles that destroyed my lawn. Maybe a winter application would be better. I think coffee grounds are an excellent soil amendment ..if you can tolerate the side effect of mole tunnels. That probably would not be the case in winter.
