Anyone try fabric pots for starting bands?

Hope everyone has been having a happy holiday!

I was just perusing a garden catalog and say the large fabric bags with handles. I wouldn't consider them in the long run, but would they work for a year or two as you get a band up and running and plan a permanent home? I like the handle concept and that you could fold them up when not in use. Anyone ever try? Thoughts? Thanks!

I use these for my vegetable garden. They work very well, I don't have the ones with handles. The ones I have supposedly 'root prune' so instead of the usually spiral of a rootball, the roots stay straight and more airy.

I was thinking of using these for roses that I want to keep permanently in pots (you could then put inside a decorative pot) which would make repotting or replacing soil easier. But putting bands in the would be great. You would have to take off the bag before permanent planting, they don't break down in the soil.

Also, for my veggies, I use a heavier mix of soil, not a light potting soil. There aren't drainage issues with these pots, so you can use regular garden soil. The extra water runs right out. You may have to water more than with a plastic pot however.

I just went on the site where I bought my fabric pots (smartpots) they now have one and two gallon 'transplanter' pots. These would be perfect for bands!

I may get some of these.

Buford, when you water your veggies in the smart pots, how well does it drain?

They drain very well, the water will run right out of the sides and bottoms of the pot. That's why you don't use regular potting soil, it would dry out too fast.

These are the ones that I was considering.

I've used 15 gallon smart pots to grow most of our roses to a more mature size before planting. They develop a very healthy root system and don't suffer as much stress when they are planted in the ground.

Also, I can test the rose in the spot I've chosen for it to see how it looks / grows / flowers there. I've changed my mind quite a few times about a new roses' location because it did not grow well there.

If you put the cloth pots on top of soil the plant will root into the outside soil which is a plus until you move the pot. Then you have to pull up those extra roots. There are so many roots left in the bag though the plants don't seem to mind other than needing a little more water than before.

Bottom line is they work really well for me.
