Several years ago, I got a HT on Fortuania root stock. Just this weekend, I was going through all my roses, trimming dead bits, etc. When I noticed severe suckers on this particular rose. I broke the suckers off at the roots, and trimmed off the dead rose branches. unfortunately, this left only a three inch green branch about the thickness of my little finger. Any ideas on what I could do to baby it back to health?

Get a good watering program going so it never goes dry and then put down mulch if you haven't already. Then start with a slow release organic fertilizer and if the rose is shaded, try to get it some sun if you can without having to dig it up. It's possible that with the suckers gone it may make another cane from the bud union area. I saw this happen before on a rose in a similar situation on Dr. Huey roots. I would put a basin to catch water (make a ring of soil) around it if you think lack of water is a problem. I don't know what kind of soil you have, if it's sandy maybe more food would better. Mine is clay based but I think mulch helps any kind of soil.

Thank you. The rose is in a raised bed with well draining soil, and in the sun. I'll keep a close eye on the moisture of the soil, and get some good slow release fertilizer (I usually use liquid.) Any recipes for an organic slow-release fertilizer? or suggestions for a commercial brand?
