Ant colony art...example of how ants disrupt plant's roots

This is a video of molten aluminum being poured into an ant colony. The results are promoted as an "art form", which is pretty cool. Watching it, I was struck how wonderfully it demonstrates how ants can disrupt the vigorous growth of plants through their activity. You know how crucial it is for plants to have good root to soil contact for the absorption of nutrients and water. Now, imagine this maze surrounding the roots of your roses, then add that ants actually move aphids from the top growth to the roots when weather is too severe for the aphids to survive. Any wonder why plants are stressed by an ant invasion? Kim
