Anyone have experience with this rose? I just saw it at Navlets and was curious.

Actually it's the AARS, not the ARS that sponsers these awards. Although they both are associated with roses and are "non-profit" organizations, the All American Rose Selections committe is made up of Producers/hybridizers while the ARS is made up of rose lovers so to speak. Actually I had read that with the demise of the big two rose producers/hybridizers (J&P and Weeks) that the AARS was disbanding. Hummm...Below is a link to their new 2013 winner: Francis Meilland

Well, the AARS WAS a trade organization, but as reported in the below thread from the RHA, they have disbanded. Here is the quoted email at the link below. Of course they would release the latest winners to capitalize on the "value". Kim

"Dear Test Garden Supervisors and Judges:

As you are likely aware, todays difficult economic conditions have created challenges for many American businesses. Unfortunately, All-America Rose Selections is not immune to these realities. As a result, we have been forced to make some very difficult decisions. I am sorry to inform you that at the recent AARS board meeting we have decided to stop our trial program effective immediately and will also cease to exist as an organization."

This is a sad day. I have witnessed first hand the progress that has been made in creating roses that were free of black spot fungus at least for the two years some of the roses were in trial. In the Dallas metroplex Blackspot is the number one problem of roses. The AARS test gardens have not used chemicals for the last 5 or 6 years.

I have her on order. Reminds me of Bride's Dream but with fragrance. Yay!

More about the demise of the AARS and related info in the thread linked below. In the first post of that thread, the AARS basically announced in 2010 their intention to end as of 2013.

Wish I could fix my typo! Very sad to hear that the AARS is no more. But we also have a new formation - the American Garden Rose Selections (AGRS). The "Great Recession" has changed all of our lives significantly. Hopefully when eventually the country and world economy settles, the rose industry, and so many industries that have suffered so, will be restored to health.

Couldn't stand it, I grabbed Francis Meilland. With such a name, how can it not be spectacular?

Looks like a lovely rose! You'll have to let us know how he does this season.

Francis Meilland is lovely. I'd order her, but have no room left for another rose.

I'm not so sure about the value of the (now defunct?) AARS. Although they talk about disease resistance, they must not have been testing the roses in blackspot prone areas. At least, my experience has not proven their winner to be blackspot resistant. In looking over the list of their past winners, I see I have grown at least 4 of them. Three I gave away because they periodically suffered BS problems (Love & Peace, Crimson Bouquet, Cherry Parfait). I'm keeping one of their winners -- Elle-- because I like her so much, but like the others I gave away, she tends to get some BS in between blooming cycles. I just don't have time to mess with BS prone roses in general, and the AARS winners haven't shown themselves to be much of an improvement over other roses.

Sorry to be so critical of them, but disease resistance is a HIGH priority for me, not just one criteria lost among a dozen other criteria.

They have tested for disease resistance for the past several years, but that won't help unless their strain of black spot is the same as yours. It's like getting a flu shot. If they prepared the vaccine to be effective against the Asian flue and what hits is Swine flu, the shot ain't gonna help. Same with black spot. What resists MY black spot probably won't resist YOUR black spot as they are different types of the same class of fungi. They attack and affect different genes. Roses differ greatly in which type of black spot they resist as well as how well they resist them. Some resist multiple strains to varying degrees. In light of this, it makes sense that "black spot resistant" won't mean squat until you know WHICH black spot you have and WHICH black spot the rose resists, and how well. Kim

Have been growing this rose -- Francis Meilland -- for one season, and it's one of the better newbies, in my opinion. Not quite as good as Cinnamon Dolce, but right up there.
