I KNEW when Mr Lincoln was doing lousy for me, it had to be my placement of him - with only a few hours of sun a day. I had this awful, skinny, 6' high single cane, with one boring bloom at the top, that never really opened, and a few other weak canes that teased me with little blooms, which opened, and shattered in a day. So, about a month ago I snuck him between my climbers in full sun, where he could get as crazy tall as he wanted, and it wouldn't bother me. Today he just blessed me with the most gorgeous and fragrant bloom - very much like a Chrysler Imperial bloom but a little darker in the cold. It is so nice to have a nice big smelly bloom in the house, the day before Xmas eve. What a wonderful gift.

Mine died from a fungal cane dieback disease that I lost many other roses to, but I loved him and need to replace him. He lasted a long time in the vase and on the bush.

harmony, you should see a HAPPY Lincoln! Here, you can expect him to be six by five feet when he's settled in, and loaded with those wonderful blooms. Ollie Weeks really knew (and loved!) his red HTs! Kim

I've had Mr. Lincoln for 3 years. This was its 3rd year - and wow has it improved. It had lots of canes and many, many flowers. The fragrance, shape and color are magnificent. I wanted to get rid of it after year 2, but persevered. I'm soooo glad I did - it's a fantastic rose!!! (BTW - I grow my roses in pots and overwinter in the garage) Love, love Mr. Lincoln Carol |

I should be in a good place to grow this rose and yet I haven't had any luck. These were not weak body bag ones, I got them from good nurseries. After 2 fails I tried one from Palatine and after it went own root I put it into the ground. For some reason it never took off. I think it's not the location because Olympiad right next to it is tall and bushy and on the other side is a dream come true which is also large. My Mr. Lincoln is sulking between the two :( Of my 3 plants, I never got much fragrance from Mr. Lincoln and unless it's cool weather, he isn't really red. In the summer he would stop blooming. I love Chrysler Imperial and have one own root and another on Huey. These bloom constantly. I decided to get an own root Oklahoma which is a fine bushy plant that has flowers off and on even in summer. I like the round shape of the bush and of the blooms. Just to have the whole family, I bought an own root Papa M. and I like this rose the best of all the children of C.I. Everyone said this rose won't grow much but mine is now over 5 feet and has flowered all year. Not the covers the bush sort of blooms, but the ones I get are big and showy with the best fragrance of all the family. The red is a good red and not red-pink like C.I. or Mr Lincoln. I admit that my bush of Papa M looks funny. He looks like my bush of La France did at first with long naked legs. I hope he fills in like La France did over time. I wish Mr. Lincoln could be a success for me. Everybody loves him and I have a good climate for HTs. I'm sorry to say that I have finally given up trying to grow this one.

Thats too bad kittymoonbeam if you change your mind and buy another start it in a pot for a season or two. Mine is currently in a pot going on its third or fourth season i cant remember. it chugs along happy as can be. When it is mature put it in the ground.

Bobby is spot on about starting bands and other immature plants in pots first. SOMETIMES you can have good luck putting them directly in the ground, but most often, it works much more successfully nursing them along in pots until they are the size required for the harsher in-ground environments. A band or other small cutting is an "infant" and very often benefits from being "nursed", nurtured just as we do immature people and animals, until they mature, "grow up" to the stage where they can fend for themselves. If you live in a climate where infants can fend for themselves successfully; if you are fortunate enough to have a vigorous, vital enough infant, you can very likely succeed with them directly in the ground. If you can successfully care for potted plants until they mature, you will definitely benefit from raising them on to more maturity before planting them directly in your garden. Kim

I did actually think about trying to get him on fort for my garden. I do like the flowers when he gets around to making them for me. I haven't seen any RMV on my Palatine Lincoln. Maybe just put him in a pot this winter and see if I can get him to root along the stem and later plant him out again when he's bigger. I will have a nice space to grow him in a pot when I plant 3 15 gal. roses in the ground. Mr. Lincoln gets a second chance to stay.
