New gardener needs help with roses

Hi,
I am new to gardening and would really appreciate some help with two rose bushes.
My husband and I moved into the house in June, and that's when we saw we had rose bushes. We don't know anything about how old they are or what kind they are. I asked my mom for advice because I hadn't seen any buds or blooms, and she suggested that we prune them and fertilize every few weeks. She helped me prune them. After the pruning and fertilizing, the roses had lots of new growth but still no buds or blooms.
Rose #1 grew really tall, with slender branches and not a lot of thorns, and I thought maybe it was a climbing rose. We bought a 6' trellis and tried to tie the branches to the trellis. Now I'm seeing a few problems with that idea. There is so much growth in the front of the plant that I don't think I can pull those branches back to the trellis, the rose seems like it's going to grow taller and wider than the trellis anyway, and I'm not sure if I can wind the canes back over one another… I saw videos where it looked like you just keep crossing the canes back and forth but I've also read that you should prune overlapping canes. Should I switch the trellis out to something more like a pole where I can wrap the canes around in a spiral fashion? Should I just let it grow and not worry about a trellis? What would be a good solution? I did see one flower from this plant, in late August/early September if I remember correctly. It was pale yellow with a little pink/apricot.
Rose #2 also grew very tall but I never saw buds or blooms. The branches are hard and very thorny. My husband thinks we should get a trellis for it but it is so tall and I'm not sure how we would train it.
The other problem with Rose #1 is that it had black spots on the leaves, which I was trying to control by picking the leaves off, but I'm concerned that I might need a spray.
If anyone has any suggestions for training/supporting the roses, and/or what we should be doing to make sure they're healthy and blooming, please let me know! I would love to see beautiful roses in my yard in spring/summer.
Thanks!!

It is great that you have inherited some roses! SInce you have already done clean-up and some pruning and feeding, here is what I would do if they were mine: I would weed around the base of each plant, so that there are no grass or weeds within about 20 inches of where the canes are coming out of the ground. Then I would put about 2 inches of mulch (which you can buy at any nursery) around the same area, making sure that the mulch does not actually touch the canes. Then I would LEAVE THEM ALONE UNTIL SPRING! Don't worry about "no buds or blooms" - it is Winter, and they should be resting. Patience, patience is the thing that is most important when dealing with roses.

In the Spring they will bloom, and then you can take pictures of them and post the pictures on here, and folks will be able to tell you at least what kind of roses they are, and perhaps even their names. Different types of roses need different kinds of care - we will know more when we find out what kinds they are. Nothing more needs doing right now. It will be so exciting in the Spring when they start to grow and bloom - please let us know.

Thanks for your reply! I should have been more specific - I didn't see any buds or blooms at all this summer, except the one flower in August or September (can't remember exactly when). That's why I wasn't sure what to do with them this summer.

They will bloom in the Spring. Some roses bloom a lot in the Spring, and then nothing until the next Spring. Others start in the Spring and then bloom all Summer, but if they are not getting enough water, or light, they might not bloom as much. So, let's see what happens next Spring, and then go from there.
