I was just reading a couple of older posts in which posters noted that they ordered Pomponella (Fairy Tale) from Palatine, but in at least 2 cases, were sent something else that was pink but definitely NOT Pomponella. Well, now you have me worried since I just ordered a Pomponella from Palatine. Did anybody actually get a Pomponella from Palatine, or do they all end up with a mislabled pink? This is the last open spot in my garden and I don't want to put a "mistake" in it--I want Pomponella. What are my chances of getting what I ordered from Palatine? Kate

| Kate, I've never ever received a mislabeled plant from Palatine. And I order from them since they began shipping to the US, sometimes I order twice a year. Even if you happen to get a mislabeled plant, I am pretty sure, they will send you a replacement. Palatine has the most wonderful customer service around. Here is my Pomponella for you:)

Marina, is that middle picture one plant? If it is, it puts mine to shame LOL! Its beautiful! Kate, I've never rec'd a mislabeled plant either. They have the largest, healthiest bareroots that I've received from any nursery though :) I can't offer my experience with their Pomponella; mine was a band from Rogue Valley, but it really is a unique and healthy plant. You'll be very happy with it! Tammy

Kate -- I am a big fan of Pallatine. I did receive a plant that might or might not be what is supposed to be, and they will be sending a replacement this coming spring. For bareroots, they are my favorite. My plants, though, do better in pot than in ground, possibly because my soil is not very kind to multiflora rootstock.

Tammy, no don't blame your plant! :) There are two roses growing side by side :)

My Palatine Pomponella was the correct plant as well. I had to wait for it to go own root before it liked my soil but once it did it was so happy. Mine grows wide as well and has good clean glossy leaves right to the ground. I love this rose!

Gorgeous photos, Dark Lady, thanks for sharing the beauty!

Oh, thank you, everybody, for reassuring me! I really want a Pomponella--Dark Lady's photos explain why, don't they! Just gorgeous! Thanks for sharing them, Dark Lady. I've ordered from Palatine a couple times and had good results, so I'll just have to have good faith that Palatine will come through again. It was odd, however, that a couple posters both got the same wrong plant when they ordered Pomponella from Palatine. Kate

Those are two plants? I thought there was a whole row of them! They look wonderfully healthy, with an incredible amount of bloom. Kate, I can certainly understand that you want to be sure to get the real thing. Ingrid

The canes bend down and so I can see it rooting in the earth to the sides if you wait long enough.

Kittymoonbeam, are you talking about my photo? If yes, then no. My bushes do not root to the sides. They have two distinct bases (not seen on the photo). Photos sometimes are deceptive:) Marina |

I meant mine were getting so wide that they were bending down and touching the ground. My Sonia Rykiel is beside my Pomponella and doing the same thing and is making roots. I don't trim them in spring so they just get long and spread out. There is a walkway right behind but I put in some stakes and tie the canes up vertically so they don't grab anyone. That's one of my favorite spots to put a pad and a blanket and read next to those two big beauties. Usually I get it all set up, go in for a book and some juice and when I get out there, the cats have stretched out on the blanket and there's no room for me! Don't you think it's funny how ever since that one famous plant of Raubritter was planted by the water's edge, everyone else has been doing it. I keep seeing different rose books with Raubritter hanging into water. Descanso Gardens has one. Guess where...falling over a wall into the water. I always loved Raubritter but if it rains when that one bloom comes it's over until next year. When Pomponella came along I was dancing for joy. I hope they can come up with a sister for Pomponella that is the color of Raubritter because I know the color of Pomopnella discourages some people from getting it. I love your rose gardens Dark Lady. What time of the year is spring rose prime season in VA? I'd love to travel and see roses there one day. VA seems like rose heaven.

also, Pomponella is not as viciously thorny as Raubritter.

Kitty, I agree about color of Pomponella - not one of my favorites, but I really like it when the blooms age and get that silvery sheen to them. My favorite 'Raubritter/water' combo is from Mottisfont Abbey, their central fountain area. I live near Richmond and prime time for roses here is first decade of May - everything is in bloom, from antiques to moderns. Come and visit, I will be happy if you find some time for my garden, too. If you are somewhere nearby... Marina |

Saw it in NY Botanic in late summer. Clean as a whistle, blooming up a storm, seven feet by seven feet. Five days later in Missouri Botanic - defoliated by black spot, no flowers and lacking in vigor. Hard to figure out.

It has been my healthiest rose apart from the hulthemias. Pretty much everything gets blackspot at the end of summer but not Pomponella. I am absolutely loving both its quite unique raspberry colour and its pom-pom form and matching round leaves. A really interesting rose and a pleasure to own since it asks for so little and pumps out so much.
