I was kvetching some time back about really disliking the look of Cinco De Mayo. I had her sitting in HT perfect form row - amongst Pink Peace and Brides Dream and Chrysler Imperial and Dream Come True, and she just looked like duck out of water there. When I dug her out to replace her with Neptune I hadn't exactly made a plan for where she was to go. But as I sat there staring at her on her side, one of the healthiest and prolific roses I have, I thought - hey I have an idea. So, I put her between two leggy cl. St. Joseph Coats that needed some lower level filler between them. I LOVE her there. Of course she's still blooming, just dug up and replanted and in winter and all. The coats are not, but when they do, I think the yellow, orange and brownish/red will be fabulous. And I cut one of her blooms and have it at work today, and I must say that strange bloom shape is starting to grow on me.

I picked up a Cinco D Mayo at a rose sale, have it next to Mardi Gras, and I just love it. A real bloom machine, and the color grows on you.

Mine's still ugly. If it looked like the advertising photos I'd be happy, but it doesn't. Grrrr!

It's a great feeling when you move a rose and suddenly it seems so much better. Congrats!

I got plants of Cinco de Mayo and Distant Drums in a single package from one of the big box stores. I really just wanted Distant Drums, but planted the Cinco de Mayo as well. I was not happy with CdM as it clashed with colors of the neighboring roses and dug it out after a year or so and potted it up. We started another rose bed in another part of our property. The front row had alternating bushes of "Easy Does It" and "Colorific"; the rear row had CdM in in center; on either side of it were plants of "Chilhuly". On the ends of the rear row were plants of Benjamin Britten. We had a row of the Scarlet Magellan zinnias (5 inch flowers on 12 inch plants) in from the the roses and taller zinnias in reds, orange and yellow planted behind the roses. CdM looked very much at home in all of this.

that sounds beautiful john_ca. Perhaps I should move CdM to see if that will help.

I had her for a year before I even bothered to bend over to sniff her, and I was blown away that she actually had a fragrance. She was just that homely, I had no incentive to even sniff her. Poor thing. My stall cleaner's little girl is on vacation from school, so we got to "hang" together last week. I was telling her some of the names of the roses, and when I showed her Cinco De Mayo she lit up, and took a bloom in her hands. She said - "I know why they named it like this - it looks just like a Pinata!" I'll definitely plan to take a pick of her between the St. Joseph Coats when everything starts to flush.

hoovb: I think that this is probably one of the most difficult roses to place in our garden because of its unusual color. I think its original neighbors before were Tahitian Sunset and First Prize. In its new setting, we denfinitely appreciate CdM much more than before. We did not plan this arrangement described above. We had just ordered a bunch of roses from Chamblees that appealed to us, and they happily went together better than we had ever imagined. Its wonderful when the unplanned just works out.

I purchased (actually rescued) 3 Cinco de Mayo roses in August, 2011. I had seen a beautiful CdM growing in a friend's yard and I had been smitten by the various colors on this rose bush, but I could see where placement in the garden would be a problem. I decided that blue flowers would be good companions for this unusual rose, so I planted two Mystic Spires salvia between the 3 CdMs and I am pleased with that color combo. Molly |

Brilliant idea! I had a gold medal at the base of mine for years but I think Cinco would be even better. That's going to be some spring show!
