I am going to move belindas dream. Should I try to keep most of the dirt on the roots or is it ok if I take ALL the dirt off. Its a little wet/mucky but not too bad, I planted 5 bare root today & will attempt to move BD tomorrow. Any tips?

Hi Tim --

If it was me, I'd keep all the roots that you can, intact.

If the root ball falls apart, tho, probably not a lot of harm done.

We've done this in late July, and had the root ball shatter, and gotten an un-forecast heatwave the next day. We just kept it very wet for a few days, and nothing even wilted, believe it or not.

The more root disturbance, the more critical keeping it very well watered becomes. This time of year, with the rain levels we're getting in California, it's far less critical. Maintaining as much root ball intact as possible will result in as little set back to the plant, but you COULD even completely bare root the plant (cutting the top back to balance it with the remaining roots, of course) and it should easily rebound when the weather is right. Keep the root ball as intact as possible. Trying to bare root it will take off a lot of the small feeder roots causing transplant shock and will slow down it's recovery.

I moved a rose in mid summer once & it fried, Guess I didnt water it enough or something. I will try to keep as much as the root ball in tact as possible, but its going to weigh a ton with wet clay soil. The rain is coming tonight, around 2" through Sunday so I start digging in a couple of hours.
Thanks

Absolutely keep the root ball as intact as you can. Also, be sure to prune the bush down to a much shorter size - that will make it easier to move, and will save it from trying to support a huge amount of top growth while it is recovering. Most of the transplantation failures I have seen were because the gardener just tried to move the bush as is.

I've dug up and replanted close to 100 roses this year. They are definitely happier having it done this time of year versus in the peak of the heat. But, I can tell you that I haven't lost a single rose. Some lost all leaves, some retained almost all leaves. The less you mess with the roots the better, but don't give yourself stress. You don't say how long it's been in the ground. Personally, I try to leave the root ball/feeder roots intact, but readily cut the anchor roots to get them out. I've also used it as an opportunity to amend the soil in the newly dug holes.

I couldn't move the rose, its was too heavy for me to do alone without ripping off roots & loosing most of the dirt around them. Will have to try again when I have help & its dryer, its rained 2.8" since Thursday with more to come.
BD has only been in the ground 11 months so its not very big.

When you dig it up put it on a tarp and drag it to it's new spot. Much easier than trying to carry it and you'll keep the ball in better shape too.
