Let's show Austin Bushes Growing in the Garden

Those of us who live far from rose show gardens often do not get the chance to see certain roses in real life. In my town, for instance, I've only run into ONE person who grows an Austin rose--and only ONE Austin rose at that (Juliet). I'd love to see not just the beautiful Austin blooms--plenty of pics of that--but shots that let me see what the bush itself looks like.

I've got a couple bush shots of Austins. Let's see how many bush shots we can compile on this thread. As a blooming bush/shrub, the Austins sometimes have a somewhat different appearance.

Here is my 3-in-1 Molineux--makes a nice full bush that way.

This one only half applies--a mixture of Austin's Dark Lady and some modern roses selected by Clements. It is called Braveheart:

Not the clearest of bush shots, but you can see how well Austins can fit into a cottage style of gardening. That's Braveheart again in the left-back and part of Jubilee Celebration in front.

I'd love to see your Austins growing as bushes in your garden plots. Hopefully, if a number of us each have a few bush shots, we can compile a nice library of Austins in the Garden.

Oh, Krista, what a nice collection of Austin pinks you have! Evelyn in particular is outstanding, but the others are all gorgeous too.

A couple of those, seen as bushes, are better looking than I expected. Thanks for the views.

all beautiful!!

Lovely pics! I've always wanted Geoff hamilton rose but it's not available here. This rose has a perfect cupped shape that reminds me of austin's florist rose. I wonder if DA use this rose in his breeding.
I hope other people could contribute to this thread. Maybe it helps if this was posted in the main forum instead.

Here's some of Graham Thomas. As he got older he got much lankier, but that may well have been due to my lazy pruning.

Here's Mary Rose, the shape of the bush is always perfect, even after years. And no pruning.

Speaking of Mary Rose, does anyone remember whatever happened to that striped sport of (I think Mary Rose, was a pink Austin for sure)? It was from on of the forum members.

Sorry, reorganizing my photobucket and broke the links. Here's Graham Thomas when he was more well behaved and cared for.

I'm so glad you posted that picture again, alto. I love GT. Too bad I don't have room for one that gets so big.

I'd love to see more bushes "in situ"--growing in the garden.

I somehow missed this post until now but I'm so glad I found it! Mortimer Sackler is a thing of beauty and I don't think I've seen a bush shot of it before. By growing it as a shrub you avoid the hassle of having a climber and still get a huge number of flowers.

This thread was a brilliant idea Kate. Thank you all for the gorgeous photos.

Glad you are enjoying it, ingrid. So am I.

Mortimer is the perfect carefree rose, except that I have to trim it back at least a couple times each summer. It really wants to be a climber, but there isn't enough room there for me to fit in an extra tall climbing device. I like it as a taller shrub however--works fine in that spot. It has good disease resistance. All I have to do is to remember to water it occasionally since it is not within range of the usual watering patterns.

Myself, these bush shots are reminding me how much I adore Graham Thomas--but I have no place left to plant one! Evelyn is such a beauty also!

Wow! I didn't know that Golden Celebration could be trained into a climber. It looks great!
I wish I had taken some pics of my 3rd year Mayor of Casterbridge rose before I moved houses. The Spring flush was spectacular and my 2 sisters (who never taken interest in roses) were surprised to see such a huge rose with tons of formal pink blooms.

Gee whiz, I'd like to see more posters add to our collection here. So many of us like to see whole plant shots--so please feel free to share some of yours with us. We are eager to see them. : )

I think really many Austins look better when they do not get too large. My 'Evelyn' gets too big, and then the proportion of flower to foliage is not as pretty.

....uh...I don't know hoovb...I kinda like that pic! :-)

Me too, Jerome. : )

RE: Let's show Austin Bushes Growing in the Garden

Hoovb, I would say if anything, the proportion of the bloom is too big for the shrub haha...look at the size of those blooms! It looks like a whole bunch of babies heads just peaking out of the shrub. I think the large and color varied blooms tend to fit the "grandeur" of Evelyn's foilage and does provide a backdrop to appreciate each bloom more as it contrasts the green. I just wish my Evelyn was that big as mine is stuck around 3.5ft tall x 3.5ft tall. I'd prefer it would be more around 5x5ft.

 o
RE: Let's show Austin Bushes Growing in the Garden

Hoovb, your rose is gorgeous! What a lovely photograph. You can't be serious; I would practically kill for that rose!

RE: Let's show Austin Bushes Growing in the Garden

My Evelyn is a two-cane wonder that gives me maybe three blooms a month. I'm pretty sure it's a bad clone--and she blackspots.

 o
RE: Let's show Austin Bushes Growing in the Garden

How old is your Evelyn Florida? Mine was that way in it's 2nd year in a pot. It sent out 2 long canes, bloomed, and then was pretty much done. Once I transplanted it into the ground...granted it was very poor soil(and still is), it did better and is now more of a 5-6 cane upright shrub that's about 3.5ft x 3.5ft and growing.

RE: Let's show Austin Bushes Growing in the Garden

Jeff, she was one of the first roses I bought so she's about eight years old on Fortuniana, She has no excuse for not blooming at this point. Excellent imported soil, sun, with all necessary amendments. I think I would like to try an own-root to see what that would do.

 o
RE: Let's show Austin Bushes Growing in the Garden

I'd just take a cutting off of it and root it and see how it does. It could be a poorly grafted fortuniana, which should thrive in your area.
