| The name means beautiful (venusta), somewhat downfacing (pendula) one (i.e., a rose). (Or "little downfacing" one, it's a diminutive). It is supposed to suggest a scientific name of Rosa venusta pendula. But, of course, it is not really a species. There are a lot of fake scientific names like that. It was sort of a conceit or affectation from a time -- not that long ago -- when most people took Latin. I think it is pretty, though. The word "venusta" (beautiful) is derived from "Venus", i.e., as beautiful as the goddess Venus. |
