Jerome, your contributions to the gallery lately have been simply wonderful, and this one is no exception. When I look at your beautiful General Tartas I could cry since I had one and discarded it since it fried in the heat. I wish now I had given it another year or two to prove itself. Frankly, I wish I could steal yours. Monsieur Tillier is another one that went to rose heaven because of frying, and I see yours seems to have at least partial shade. You have such beautiful roses and I'm going to give credit to the gardener. Ingrid

Thanks Ingrid. I am posting because you asked more people to post, and I am gardening more this year. Unfortunately my little phone camera is getting blurrier with age. I'll keep posting.

Lovely, lovely, lovely. I'd never heard of Gen. Tartas before, but am now very impressed with it. Wish that were my Teasing Georgia! Don't have enough space left to grow anything that big. : ( Kate

Wonderful pics, Jerome. It's really interesting to see the pic of Lamarque, showing the whole plant. I've become very fond of Noisettes.

Jerome, One day, somehow, I'd like to visit your garden. It looks wonderful--peaceful and restful. But in the meantime, I may have to get a Teasing Georgia thanks to you...

I wish I could charter a jet for all of you so you could come visit. That would be great fun.

You have many beautiful roses, Jerome. General Tartas is lovely and Monsieur Tillier is big and healthy. How big is your Devoniensis?

Masha, Devoniensis here (planted in 2006) is about hip high, 3 feet? It mildews, it grows about as fast as a live oak tree (not very!) and I've said "it's outta here" to myself a million times...and then it flowers. I see it's incrementally better each year; blooms a little more, mildews slightly less, grows a little faster, and so I keep it. The blooms are perfection. It's not a rose for the impatient. Florence, you were the first person I thought of when the charter idea came to mind :-) xoxo

Jerome, After seeing your photo of Teasing Georgia, I am panicking. I have just planted two on a tiny little pergola with Bomeria multiflora, Solanum rantonetii and other plants! Well, I suppose that it will be survival of the fittest. My Devoniensis was planted only last year. The first year it didn't flower at all, and didn't grow very much either. This year however, it has started blooming, and has put out some new basal growths. It still has mildew though. Hopefully, it will grow out of it. Daisy |

Well Daisy, mine have been in the ground 6 years and they still mildew - a lot. I read (I think on the David Austin website...but I could be wrong) that roses that mildew may need more water, and I am adding hand waterings to the 3 Devoniensis I have (4 actually - 3 bushes from 2006 and 1 climber, added last year). I just started this, but I think there's something to that. We're stingy with water here (it's a dry climate and we don't want to waste water), but I give some of the roses additional water to the drip system when they look bad. I am doing the same thing to Lady Hillingdon, which was ghastly here until this year. It needs more water than most of my other teas. As for Teasing Georgia, keep in mind I didn't prune it at all this year. I could not face those thorns after dealing with 200 other roses, and so I just said "o...next year." Still, if you keep it small, I think you'll be working against nature. In my climate, this wants to be a big rose, and I inherited it because its previous owner didn't have the room.

Well kids...I hope you enjoyed these. High winds yesterday and today have destroyed pretty much everything. A little band of "Halloween" I planted a few weeks ago is just gone...nice big basals all blown off plants. I am really bummed. Makes me want to retire from gardening.

Jerome, beauty can be so ephemeral, and I can well imagine how you feel. However, your pictures live on. Ingrid

Oh Jerome-----I am so sorry to hear this----many times we become discouraged with our gardens and the setbacks---- please don't leave us or your garden--I so look forward to your posts and pictures. I was so pleased when I read that you thought of me as a passenger on your Jet--What a joy that would be---- Florence
