Early Spring

The garden is a long way from being in full bloom but I thought it would be interesting to catch it at this stage, before the (hopefully) big spring flush. It was an overcast day and the colors aren't very bright, but I didn't change anything except to crop some of the pictures. Didn't even think to remove the hose and of course the weeds are abundant. Nevertheless, the promise of what's to come is there for me.

Just Beautiful Ingrid! And your view is to die for! What part of California do you live? I also have Duchess de brabant, a young one that is, and seeing yours makes me so glad I got it!

Everything's beautiful, Ingrid. The color of Mrs. Woods is particularly appealing to me. I wonder why. Hehe.

Love the purple thing, don't remember what it is, just remember I can't grow it. :(

Mutabilis is really getting big. Souv d'un Ami is gorgeous as is DdB. Aw, what the heck. They're all gorgeous! Thanks, Ingrid.

Ingrid, your garden looks so beautiful this year in early spring. 'Souvenir d'un Ami' is to die for (I love the muted color and the flower form) as is 'Mrs. B. R. Cant'. May I ask, what is the blue perennial in the middle of the pic of Duchesse de Brabant? It gives such a great contrast in texture and color to that rose.

Thanks for posting, hope we see more photos of your garden soon.

Thank you all very much. Emma, I live about 25 miles northeast of San Diego. My Duchesse de Brabant is also young, and I'm afraid I didn't leave enough room for it.

Florence, I'm glad you like the pictures. I just wish my garden had mature roses like yours. I guess only time will take care of that.

Sherry, the purple plant is Sea Lavender. I wonder if you're seeing a resemblance to Le Vesuve in Mrs. Woods LPN. The latter has much smaller flowers but I do love the color (although not the mildew it has now).

Christina, the blue flower you're inquiring about is a variety of penstemon. I hadn't seen it before but snapped up two when I saw them in a local nursery last year.

Thanks for the response, Ingrid. I didn't know that penstemons come in colors that blue! Great that you snatched this one up at the nursery!

Wow, beautiful pics, Ingrid. I especially like Duchesse de Brabant.

Your Tea Roses are splendid, love the blooms and soft shades.

Oh! How lovely that you shared a pic of Mrs. Woods Lavender Pink Noisette. It does look similar to NN.

Good going, Ingrid! Enabled me into another rose. You will get a call from my financial advisor soon LOL.

International Herald Tribune looks interesting too. Love the vibrant color.

I better turn the computer off before I get into more trouble.

Luv ya,

Audrey

Ingrid, your garden is so beautiful! What a great view. Loved the pictures. I have been following this forum for a while and was just so enabled that I ordered 7 DA's. They have picked up well and I am waiting on the first blooms. My Dutchess de Brabant is fairly new but i think it has thrips, also Belinda's dream has thrips. I noticed this last yr too, the first flush has thrips, after that they were ok. Is that common ? Hoping to post some of my pictures soon. Thank you so much for sharing.

RE: Early Spring

ibheri, thank you so much for the nice compliments.

Thrips are very common in some areas and many rosarians complain about the first flush of blooms being ruined, but fortunately I haven't had that experience. I live in a very hot and dry area and that may not be prime thrip habitat. How nice that you're getting some Austin roses. I really like the ones I have, which are mostly the older ones that aren't so large. Good luck with all your roses.

Wow...your garden was pretty to begin with - but as it matures, and fills in the setting, it's beautiful. Souv. d'un Ami is amazing. Where did you get it from? (dangling preposition....sorry...)

RE: Early Spring

Jerome, I'm so sorry I have no record of where I bought Souvenir d'un Ami. I could kick myself for not having kept records of all my purchases from the beginning. I'm doing so now but the earlier ones are lost to memory. I want to say Vintage but it really is a guess. This rose seems a little difficult to obtain now. I had two and gave one to organicgardendreams since she wanted one badly and couldn't find a source. I'm quite happy with only having one and was able to plant Cl. Lady Hillingdon where SdA had been. That's one rose I just had to have.
