My oldest, and most prized rose ... 'Reine des Violettes'.
She's quite a few years old now. In the spring, its foliage is the most luxurious of all my plants.

I'm really not good at this any more ... let's try that again.

Randy, that's a glorious specimen! The color is really unsurpassed when it comes to purple, and it has a much nicer growth habit than modern purple roses.

Ingrid, at one time, I grew this RdV as a short "climber" tied to a tripod of rebar poles. It did well that way, but I eventually removed the rebar and now I prune its height back 2 or 3 times a year. Not hard pruning, but just to lower the height and keep it bushier. It's responded well to that, and actually seems to like it. I really enjoy its relaxed plant habit and the way its thornless canes like to arch over. The leaves are flat and almost blue-green at times. Nothing quite like it, no wonder it's stood the test of time. Blooms don't last long (not great for cutting) but are amazing to me in color, form, and scent. This plant took a few years to settle in (no instant gratification) but once it did it has surprised me at how tough it is. It seems to have decided that Texas isn't so bad now and isn't the slightest bit finicky these days.

Randy, thank you for posting this incredible picture of RdV. It's one of the best full bush shots I've seen. Good to know it takes a little while to settle in. I haven't seen much growth on mine, it's beginning its second summer here.

Really lovely rose, Randy. Reine des Violettes is one of my favorites, I like the arching habit and the blooms are so charming.

I love the colors- both the flowers and the foliage.

Sidos-House, yes, it definitely took its sweet time getting settled in. Now, years later, it's pretty much unstoppable.

Krista, if I had more room, I'd let it arch all over the place, because I like that habit too. But it's been more than willing to let me maintain its size. Very easy to prune and of course being thornless helps.

Hosenemesis, yep, the colors are unique on this one.

I remember how much you love this rose---Mine was planted in 2009 and it did well for a couple of years but now it is very small--Probably doesn't get enough sun.

I keep hoping it will come back------

Gorgeous! How old is it?

Sorry I took so long to respond ... that Reine des Violettes was planted quite a few years ago. Back when I first used to post on this forum a lot. I admire it more and more every passing year. At one time I had it growing up a rebar tripod ... something I learned from this forum. Over the years, I began to have less time for maintenance of my garden, so I grow it as a bush now and just prune its height occasionally.

Hi, Florence! I remember your beautiful garden having a lot of shade. Even remember you peeking out from under the shade of your huge Zephy rose. Yep, you're right, that may be what it is. Anyway, I hope your RdV stops "shrinking" on you!

Hey, Joe! Doesn't RdV smell great! I bet it smells just as good in the Bronx as it does in Dallas.

Randy--so nice to hear from you---I remember your beautiful RdeV--I also remember when you used to post a lot on GW with pictures of your gorgeous roses

My RdeV was sort of growing then a deer had her for lunch-----it upset me because it is a lovely rose----I have a fence around her now so hopefully she will bounce back
Please keep posting

Your Reine de Violettes is gorgeous!! Mine did really well too this year, finally! I guess its a rose that takes its time to hit its stride. Mine is probably 6 years old now. I have mine wound around a tripod but maybe I should prune it the way you prune yours. Shelley

Florence, I hear you, those deer can really chow on the roses based upon my sister's experience. No deer here, but plenty of hungry rabbits in the 'hood. I just let them eat since they do no real damage.

Shelley, yes, it took my RdV a few years to reach its stride too. It's been surprisingly tough once it got there.
