There will be six new varieties of English roses launched at Chelsea:
Official pictures and descriptions:
Photobucket
Cariad (‘Auspanier’) English Musk hybrid.
A large, airy shrub with dainty, grey-green foliage.
The flowers, which are held on thin, wiry stems, are a
soft rose pink and semi-double in form. Early in the
season the fragrance is myrrh with a touch of tea at
the bud stage, becoming a spicy musk when open.
Later in the season the musky scent is more in
evidence, with elements of orange peel and almonds.
An ideal garden shrub that will mingle naturally with other plants in the mixed border. It has excellent resistance to disease. The name ‘Cariad’ is Welsh for ‘Love’.

Photobucket
England’s Rose (‘Auslounge’) Old Rose hybrid.
A particularly reliable cultivar with medium-sized,fully-double flowers of pure, deep, rose pink. The flowers have an attractive button eye and are shallowly cupped, the outer petals eventually reflexing back. England’s Rose flowers more or less continually from June right through to the end of the season in October or even November. The flowers are attractively held in large clusters. This is a very weather resistant rose and even in periods of continual rain, the blooms do not ball and the petals drop
cleanly. It will make an attractive bushy shrub about 4ft tall and 3ft across although it could easily get taller if pruned lightly. An ideal cultivar for planting in a rose border or mixing in with perennials. The fragrance is particularly good – strong, warm, spicy with a classic Old Rose character.

Maid Marion (‘Austobias’) English Musk hybrid. Maid Marion can produce superbly formed flowers, with buds that start as rounded cups with large outer petals enclosing numerous smaller petals within. These open to a perfect rosette-shaped flower in the form of a saucer; the outer petals forming a perfectly rounded rim. Their colour is clear rose pink. The growth is relatively upright but quite bushy and compact. Initially thefragrance is a soft myrrh – as the flower ages it becomes more fruity with a distinct clove character. 3ft x 3ft.

Photobucket
An exciting new development that may lead to a new group of
English Roses. As a young flower, the colour is deep pink - almost red - gradually fading to pure, deep pink as it matures. The undersides of the petals have a hint of yellow. Flowers over a very long period, in large clusters, providing colour from June to the frosts. The leaves are shiny, dark green and particularly healthy. The compact, bushy growth makes it suitable for formal and informal borders or for hedging. Medium to light tea fragrance. 3
x 2ft.

Photobucket
Susan Williams-Ellis (‘Ausquirk’) Old Rose hybrid. A chance white stem from the popular pink ‘The Mayflower’, with rosette-shaped flowers, strong fragrance and good health. It flowers early (usually late May/early June) and continues until the harder frosts. Extremely winter hardy. Strong Old Rose fragrance. Ideal for the border, hedging or a container. 4 x 3ft. Susan Williams-Ellis was a pottery designer and co-founder of Portmeirion Pottery.

Photobucket
The Lady’s Blush (‘Ausoscar’) Alba hybrid. A charming semi-double cultivar. The flowers start as elegant,
pointed buds and open into rounded cups of pure soft pink
with a creamy-white eye in the centre. The stamens are soft
yellow with golden yellow pollen and a prominent red ring at
their base, which accentuates the centre. This is a healthy
cultivar, perfect for all types of borders and especially effective when combined with annuals or perennials in mixed borders. It will grow into an attractive, rounded bushy plant of about 4 x 3ft. Named for the 125th anniversary of The Lady magazine, which is the oldest weekly magazine for women.

So enjoy! Jana

OMG! I am trying to wean myself away from the Austins, but I just can't resist! The photos are so captivating!

I like the first photo, Cariad, the second photo of the light pink, Princess Anne, and Lady’s Blush (I’m a sucker for stamens). Can’t wait to get these!

How long does it take for the new intros in England to start showing up in the US? Does anyone know?

God help me! I need Austin intervention asap!

Audrey

Audrey, I'm with you. I get so weak with some of the DA roses that I can't resist. They usually take two years to get here after being introduced in the UK. In the long run, nothing compares to the beauty of the old garden roses. Some of these are gorgeous though. Ushak, thanks for posting these. It's nice to see what's coming from DA.

Maid Marion and Susan Williams-Ellis look great. I like how both appear to have the green button center. SWE could be similar to Madame Hardy in that respect and I like how it appears to be a PURE white.

I'll take one of England's Rose and one of Princess Anne please (although I'm not a fan of the latter's grumpy namesake). Thank you so much for this preview; it's very much appreciated.
