Pretty Jessica & Carl

Pretty Jessica was enticing Carl out on the back patio today with her heavenly scent.
Don't be afraid for her, Carl is a gentleman. He's a Texas prickly pear cactus variety 'Green Spineless'. Smooth dude, he is. She has few thorns and he has none. Carl belongs to my daughter and she gave him his name.

Now there's an interesting pair, Randy. Your PJ is beautiful and much bigger than mine, but mine is coming along nicely. I thought I detected spines on the younger growth on Carl. Or are those eyelashes?

Hi, Ingrid. Glad to hear your PJ is coming along. This one is a few years old now. I have another one in a container that is doing well.
As for your question on Carl the Cactus, on the younger growth those are little rubber-like growths that are where spines would be if Carl were not a spineless variety. They are very smooth to the touch with no spines at all coming out of the ends of them.
