Views of Sangerhausen as a botanical collection

Parts of this rosarium are very much garden, while other parts very much botanical collection. You'll see the difference easily. You'll also see why I enjoyed it very much without loving it.

I'm really enjoying your pictures----can't wait to see your pictures of Jon and Joan's gardens---

What a wonderful experience for you and your DH

Do they let people walk out on the tiles to see and smell the roses? I agree that it's not the prettiest way to display the plants but sometimes it's nice to be able to see a particular variety growing. A big group of one variety is always nicer looking but it's nice to have roses being saved for the future as well. One garden I saw had the roses grouped by color and surrounded by a low clipped hedge. I thought it was a nice way of doing the 1-of-each collection.

Yes, I think the tiles are intended as stepping stones. I believe I walked out a bit.

The roses at Sangerhausen are not very old. They "renew" most of them every three years or so. This seems odd to me. I'm sure that they do this for reasons that make good sense to them, no doubt having to do with climate, preservation, and perhaps space constraints. As for me, I regret not seeing most of the roses in anything approaching maturity.

Interesting that they renew the roses every three years. I can't imagine why they wouldn't want them to mature ... but as you say, I suppose they have their reasons.
