More Descanso Garden Roses and Companions (early June)

crossposted to rose gallery

Some roses are just starting to bloom at Descanso Gardens now, while others are on their way out. It was educational to see so many that were stunning a few weeks ago,... that now look not as great. But something can't be the same level of beautiful all the time, right?
It was also nice to see what types of companion plants they chose, some of which are blooming more NOW than they were a few weeks ago when most of the roses were at peak. A nice way to extend the season of the garden.

Some general shots and shots of companion plantings:

Does anyone know what these charming plants are?

More guara (I LOVE GUARA)

I liked this large daisy put in with the roses.

huge bank of guara backed with butterfly bushes

lamb's ear

detail on one of the harlequin butterfly bushes. They had several large butterfly bushes in the middle of some of the rose beds. Here it's in the old tea section with rosette delizy.

a large Swany Rose

carefree delight rose and others with gladiolas growing right out of the midst of them (love this!)

More Carefree Delight

Bishop Darlington

a bench so covered in roses that you can hardly see the arbor or the bench.

Hollyhocks among the roses

still really like Crocus Rose

a gorgeous bloom on Maman Cochet cl.

chinese foxglove with roses

a mix of yarrow and other things

What Francoise Juranville looks like later in it's bloom cycle

similar shot of Marchesa Boccella

and mme. Lauriole de Barny

Augutse Renoir, lovely when properly open... but so many of the buds looked kinda ick.

The charming plants are in the veronica/speedwell family.

That looks like a really nice garden to visit!

Lovely photos! The blue plants probably are Veronica longifolia, but can be other similar veronicas, great as companion plants in general.

The brown mess looks indeed educational, it is great to see that sort of pictures in HMF, since they give a better idea if you want that sort of rose in most visible place.

Aimee, these are great pictures. I never realized the garden has so many other plants. It really creates so much more interest. I have to say some of the roses really die an unattractive death. I'd hate to have a rambler or climber with those roses hanging on with no way to get to them and put them out of their misery. Very instructive pictures.

Thanks you guys! I think you are right about it being some kind of veronica. I'll have to find some local,... I really like it.

Some of you had advised me to see the roses I liked in various stages of their life, not just full flush, so I appreciate that! Though I've already kind of bought, ... and I don't think I'll really know if I love something until I have it for a couple years, so we'll see how it goes!

Ingrid, glad you enjoyed it! I'm trying to think about companion plants lately, so it's nice to see how other people do it in their gardens.

Remy - I took probably about 20 shots to get that one hummingbird shot. :) t hanks!

Great photos Aimeekitty ! You must have enjoyed it while you were taking the photos in that lovely garden. Thanks for showing me what White Eden looks like as I have a young one here in my garden. In Australia we call it Blushing Pierre de Ronsard.
