I am brand new here and I need some help. I've been working on my current gardens for 4 years and I don't feel at all satisfied. I would so much appreciate full pictures of your gardens and how they are integrated into your yard.
I have no plans of copying anyones gardens; I just need some inspiration.
Thank you,
kitty

kitty, if you'll go over to the general Rose Forum there is a thread by cottage_garden about companion plants. Near the bottom I have about six pictures of my garden, which I hope will be of help to you. I well know that feeling of frustration when the garden just doesn't look quite right, which I'm especially feeling now in the heat of summer when the garden is far from picture-perfect. If you like you can always post pictures of your garden on the forum side and invite comments to give you some new ideas. We love to help!

Kitty, copy away. I have a scrapbook full of photos from gardens I copy. Thank goodness, because if left to my own devices my garden photos would scare people off Gardenweb.

my garden is new,... I just started it this past January. I still have a lot to learn and a lot of plants are small. But here!

It's mainly roses. Around them are agapanthus, lavender, chinese foxglove, penstemon, camellia, morea, irises, nepeta, rosemary, thyme. There's one crepe myrtle on the left, and two sakura trees on the right. The right wall is wisteria.

I have alot of interests besides roses, but they are the harbingers of late spring early summer here and are greatly enjoyed.

Gardens are ever changing.. This was its second year at my new home. I extended this border around front another 30-40 feet or so, next is back beds. Each of mine takes tree removal, tree stumping for what I can, and lots of amendments, truckloads of compost and horse manure.

Thank you so much for the help!!

Ingrid, I found your photos. Wow! I could go on all day about the things I love about your garden not to mention your setting and home. I've been afraid of adding yellow but, you have it with purple and pink and I think blue and, it looks great. You definitely have an eye for colors. I want your pillar/column. I haven't seen any that size around here. Is that dark purple/blue flower heliotrope? Also, can you tell me what the hanging plant is at the top of the 2nd to last photo?
I was excited to see the other gardens on that post too. I was inspired by Lavender lass to add some arches. I will attempt to show pictures of my of my gardens for more advice. It may take a while though; the weeds are so long I'm embarassed. Thanks for your help.

Hi Hosenemesis, I saw your pictures on that other post. Your garden is so pretty. You obviously have a natural talent for gardening and just get ideas from others.
I had to go to your page to find out about your name. I love it. I totally get the hose thing. Except I get a little bit of pleasure scaring the dog and cats. Thank you for making me laugh and for the encouragement.

Hi Aimeekitty, You put me to shame with all you've done since Jan. I wish I were that quick and sure of what I'm doing. Did you put in the stone patio and paths? I'm attempting almost exactly the same thing . I've decided to wait for my husband to level the darn thing. What do you have between the stones? I really like your weeping tree. What is it? I hope to see more of your garden as it grows. Thanks, Kitty

Silverkelt, Another one to put me to shame with all the work you've done. Your view and gardens are so nice. I love all the rocks and rock walls. I had my husband build one out front and he ended up needing surgery for his hernia. All your roses are so pretty; I wish I knew their names. I have the opposite problem with trees. Instead of removing them, I'm adding them. Your problem is definitely more difficult but, all your hard work has paid off. Thanks for all of the pictures, Kitty

kitty, the blue flower is statice or sea lavender, which does even better closer to the coast with more coolness and humidity.

There is no hanging plant in the picture you mention. I think what you're seeing is the fruit panicle hanging from the palm tree there. It puts those fruits out quite often. I'm glad you liked my garden.

Roses in order are

Great Maidens Blush
Isaphan
Crocus Rose
unidentified gallica, that pickering sales as orpheline de juliet and isnt, though to my knowledge they are still doing it. They did email to let me know it was sold to them as such from stock from europe and are very suprised it isnt.
and Comte De Chambord. I have about 30-35 roses at the moment, my old home I had about 80-90 or so though I never counted, but alot of them were austins that i had to leave, or died in containers when I tried to move them over winter.

Hi! Sorry, I didn't see this for a bit.

We had a landscaper put in the major trees and the stones and grass and irrigation system for us. They also put in the agapanthus and a couple other things. I put in all the roses. I'm SO GLAD we had them do the big stuff. Our soil is really hard clay in places with rocks, and I can't even imagine digging the hole for a large tree, it would have been horrific.
I basically did a drawing of what I wanted (with measurements) and then they went over it and did a more "correct" drawing with irrigation, etc.

I would have hated to put the irrigation in:

The "stones" are broken concrete, which actually look really great and were pretty cheap to put in. They set them with new concrete, I think, if I remember right, and then put dirt inbetween them. We planted whooly thyme inbetween the stones, it's doing like gangbusters.
some photos of it in progress if it helps you:

The weeping tree is a weeping ornamental sakura (cherry) tree. "Snowfountain" it's blooms look like this:

Hi Ingrid, I think it's funny that what I think looks like some awesome hanging basket is really fruit from a palm tree. I surely won't be able to plant that in my zone. I think I can grow statice as an annual.

Silverkelt, Thank you so much for giving me the names of your roses. It really helps me a lot. I know your frustration of getting the wrong rose. My 1st rose obsession turned out to be the wrong rose and I still haven't gotten the right one.

Aimeekitty, I'm probably nuts but, I'm trying to lay the stones myself. We have very sandy soil. I also am just doing soaker hoses for irrigation because we have so many gophers around here. One of my neighbors had gophers ruin their sprinkler system and another neighbor had them chew through some of their plumbing and they had sewage in their yard. I wish I could grow a cherry tree here. If only I were a zone warmer. There's got to be something good about being in zone 4a right? Oh yeah, family and my husband still has his job. Two pretty big things.
Thank you all,
Kitty
