My new roses

I can do nothing outside, and have basically stayed in for a couple of months. Our weather has been awful, and it isn't too good today.

However, I can order roses, and I did.
I ordered:
Rubens
Rival de Paestum
General Schablikne
Erfurt

The General will be new to me. I like Erfurt because no other rose is like it. I love Rival, and have grown, Rubens, but do not remember it.

Our cold nasty weather may have killed some roses, but if not, I am sort of tired of a few, and will just replace them.

Generally Oklahoma has ok weather. This year is an exception, and I hope we won't have another exception for many years.

Have any of you had experiences with these roses? Erfurt was one of my first roses, but it was hidden down the hill. I purchased another one last year, but of course, it won't really show itself until this year.

Sammy

Oh yes, Sammy, this is a dangerous time of year! I think many of us have blown our budgets out the window being trapped inside on a snowy day with glossy catalogs and the internet, lol! I hope all your roses are winners for you!

RE: My new roses

Sorry about the bad weather, Sammy. January is a hard month even in a good year, I hate to imagine what it's like with a long run of bad weather.
I have 'Général Schablikine' and have never grown it as well as I would like, but I remember a beautiful specimen I saw years ago at Villa Hanbury on the Italian Riviera. It was an inspiring sight.
I'm philosophizing about January, and trying not to calculate the rate at which the days are getting longer. Fortunately most winters we have spells of reasonable weather in which I can get out and do chores. Last year was an unfortunate exception, so this year I have roses to prune that I haven't touched for two years. Pruning time is a good opportunity for me to have a look at every rose on the place, say hello to them and check them out, pull elm seedlings where they've gotten started at the base of roses, and so on. Today the weather was bad, so I looked at daphnes and mahonias on the computer. I don't know where to find a reasonable selection of these two genera at a reasonable (to my way of thinking) price. You can find everything in England, but not cheaply. Also I have a longstanding love affair with peonies. Perhaps I'll go have a look at them, too.
If your purchases make you dream, they're probably a bargain.

RE: My new roses

Yes, I've spent the past week researching roses and inquiring here about them--and I'm about ready to order them also.

Thought I was all out of space. Then I looked closely at an area in back that I rarely focus closely on--two spots there for larger roses! Just waiting for me to notice them!

Sammy, I hope you enjoy your new roses and take some pictures of them so we can enjoy them also. I'm not familiar with any of those. You can introduce me to them.

Let's hope we all don't go bankrupt if the winter gets too long and too cold!

Kate
