Wait, aphids?!

I was moving the pots back outside to capitalize on the warming weather and I was flabbergasted when I discovered one of the Vintage French imports, 'Milkmaid,' was covered in aphids.

This has to be the oddest season I've ever seen.

I noticed some aphids on Mlle. de Sombreuil but then we've been in the 70's and I'm sure they don't care that we call it winter. In your case though I would have thought the ice on the roses recently would have discouraged them. Tough little beasties!

Yup, the eggs will hatch when conditions favor them, no matter what time of year. They're like weed seeds, when they CAN grow, they WILL. I've already begun collecting pollen and pollinating blooms, almost two months earlier than usual. I have seedling roses germinating, two months early. The terrestrial orchids out front are sprouting...months earlier than usual. NOTHING is "normal" so far this winter...except the near total lack of water. Kim

I agree. Nothing about this winter is "normal".

I've had some already as well! I though the same thing as I was squashing them (sp?) lol we have had weird weather, but it's been going on for a while and just keeps getting more weird!

If it's warm enough, they will come!

RE: Wait, aphids?!

That's the crazy thing, it was cold! I moved the pots inside, and then when I moved them back outside there were aphids. Did they hatch inside?!

Josh

RE: Wait, aphids?!

Very likely they hatched inside. That's a problem with indoor plants. Eggs, nymphs and adults come in ON the plants; sneak in through cracks in screens, doors and windows and hitch rides in on you and your pets. I've seen scale and mealy bug get through screened windows from infested plants outside the windows to infect nearby indoor plants to near the windows. Nature ALWAYS finds a way! Kim
