CA Dreamin, Deck Climber, and Mrs BR Can

Hi all,

First off, thanks for always being here to listen and answer my numerous questions. I'm trying to figure out how to embed photos so I thought I would start off my a little view of my 'garden' and see how successful that is. Correction: Not at all successful so I will have to embed the pics one by one. Sorry all! I've checked and rechecked my public settings and html codes.

As gardeners, even here in Socal, we're always grumbling about not having the 'right sun'.

I love our front deck that we added but it's also the sunniest part of our small lot - this makes me extremely sad because I can't put any big beautiful roses except in pots. I am thinking of a climbing miniature like Jeanne LaJoie in a giant pot. I have half a mind to rip out those succulents and put in roses but my other half would choke me. What do you think?

We also have a row of privets to give privacy to the house and that also steals all the sunlight! I am thinking of planting some roses behind the privets so we can see them on our side but we won't have to cut down the privets and if the roses for some reason don't work out, I won't be in the doghouse!

I LOVE Mrs. BR Can (I call her that instead of Cant). I would like to know - can I prune her to be very wide and not very deep? She can be as tall as she likes really.

Also, just two pictures I threw in here. One is of a giant obelisk I put in for a Cl Cecile Brunner to the right of our front door. This has made training the climber bearable. For some reason, I never could do the trellis thing. We put in two more obelisks in the back garden.

Red Eden is still blooming here in Dec/Jan. This bud is just opening but when it's fully opened, it's gorgeous and smells great. Not as strong as my Cl Angel Face but it earns it's place because of the cupped blooms and healthy growth.

Hopefully those of you wishing winter were already over find a little cheer in the photos. Thinking of you ;)

x

Stacey

Oh! And that pillar you see with the obelisk are the pillars I'm trying to wrap roses around that you've heard me asking for recommendations about ;)

Very nice! I think Red Eden is just gorgeous. She was very stingy for me but boy, when she blooms they are stunners!
Thank you for sharing photos of your place and your efforts.
As for Mrs. "Can", I've only seen her VERY wide. She's a BIG GIRL but a stunner too.

Love the deck. I imagine it's a great place to enjoy your roses. I have the creamy Eden, which I adore. The red Eden is a gorgeous!

Lovely, Stacian. If you're uploading the photos from your hard drive using the "Image file to upload (optional)" in the "post a follow-up", you can only upload one per post. If you go to Flickr or Photobucket, or some of the other online photos sharing sites, you can copy the html code of the photos from those sites, paste them to your post and insert many photos per entry. It isn't difficult. You just have to pay attention to getting the first one done, then it's second nature. Kim

Glad you liked it ;)

I have Red Eden and the Cream/Pink one except that one is much smaller than I'd like. I bought it as a band before I found out that a nursery about an hour away from me was selling it in large 15 gallon buckets. That's where I met and fell in love with my Red Eden and within a year, it went gangbusters in the garden! It practically ripped down my trellis and training it was so hard on the trellis for me that I put in two more obelisks in the back.

I did the html code embedding thing - I think it worked once for me before but yesterday it just didn't want to work. Maybe it was bc the photos were set to private and then I made them public and the public setting took a little bit to take effect.

Also, I went to Home Depot yesterday and almost couldn't resist bringing home an Angel Face bush to go with my climber but I want to try as many new varieties as I can so I sped away quickly from her fragrant blooms.
