Isabella Sprunt or Safrano

We had a discussion of this rose last year, and I don't remember which one was the favorite.

I think it is Safrano.

Does anyone have an opinion of which would be the better purchase for constant bloom and no spray?

I have both, and in my experience they're identical except for the color of the bloom. 'Safrano' is the color of mixed peach and strawberry ice cream, deeper in the bud; while 'Isabella Sprunt' is pale lemon, free of any tinge of pink. They're both beautiful.

Safrano. Mine here is fabulous, and the ones at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond are also great. I had Isabella Sprunt for a while. I called her Isabella Runt, because she just refused to grow very much ... the sub-zero temperatures last winter finished her off, and I don't miss her.

Sammy, these two have been lost from our garden in bad winters, most probably from the drastic swings in temps we get.

In my garden Safranos have survived; Isabella grew backwards for a few years and is no longer here.

Safranos' late fall colors are magnificent in our fall.

Thank you, Melissa and Connie. It must have been Safrano that many preferred.

Kaye, I really need to listen to you this time. In the fall I already oredered the roses before you told me how unwise it would be.

Our winter has consisted on 3 straight weeks of freezing weather (It has broken the record), then cold that was so bad that they closed school. We have had far too much snow and ice, and more is coming next week.

None of the fall plantings look good. I have already ordered replacements for them.

I have to recognize the fact that many others will be lost. The freezing weather came before I was able to put down mulch, so the roses are on their own. Many of their stems are green, or do not look too bad, but this has been a very bad year. I don't want to lose roses like this again.

Do any of you have experience with Dr. Grill or Phalaenopsis?

Disease resistance is very important since I won't spray.

What about ARE's Pioneer series? Are there any of those that you can recommend that do not need spray? I may have Thomas Affleck, but none of the others.

Thank you, Ann. If I get either, I will remember Safrano, but I would also like some sure things.

I have both and both are wonderful and healthy no spray. I've never had any freeze damage, not even this winter with the 14 degree low.

I have Safrano and it is one of my favorites in my no-spray garden. Her fall and spring foliage is absolutely wonderful and the blooms are so beautifully formed. I purchased a Phaleonopsis from A.R.E. last January and it is proving to be a really easy care rose. I am growing it in a container and it does well for me, although I need to move it to a sunnier location, which should increase blooming.

Well, now, I am tempted again.
Thanks for your responses.

Of the teas I find at old homesteads and cemeteries in central and eastern North Carolina, Isabella Sprunt is the one. There are four (to my knowledge) in the town I live. Two are quite large and of age, and uncared for. I always thought IS was a sport of Safrano and first discovered in eastern NC by a preacher.

ARE- I have Stephen F Austin. Breathtaking beautiful apricot blooms. Not so good repeat or health- but the BS doesn't make it die back any like it does so many other roses Maybe it's not bs at all, but a lack of foliage.
IS and Safrano grow differently for me. IS is shorter and twiggier. Safrano is very tall and wide. I love both equally and will never be without either.

My Isabella Sprunt seems to like to bloom in cool fall days which are few in Louisiana. It sometimes blooms in the early spring. Dr Grill is a huge rose with lots of blooms most of the year. It's mildly fragrant, but what a beautiful tea rose.

Frogview,
Could you propagate a few of the old ones for sharing?
Safranos from North Carolina are really strong and I'd hope some of your towns' survivors might have that same strength. (Hope, hope)

Ofcourse, Ann. There is one in town that I know dates to 1980, or earlier. At least that is the furthest back I can go with it. There are a couple of others that have been brutalized by weed whackers and seem to bounce back (small) from the smallest stumps.
In the Spring, contact me through my blog, "The Gaudy Garden". I'm likely to forget as I'm not active on this forum, and don't check it very often.

Sammy,

I couldn't decide which to get so I ordered both from Chamblees, just rec'd this AM. They are very large, particulary large for mail-order, and so nice, ready to plant as soon as this weather warms up.

I know you order from ARE due to the larger 2-gallon size, but have you tried Chamblees? These are as large as the 2-gallon ARE roses and 8.95 vs 18.95 is a huge price difference. The Alister Stella Gray I ordered is also large, dark green foliage, a gorgeous plant. Mrs. Dudley Cross is big and beautiful as well.

When I said Stephen F Austin earlier I probably meant Star of the republic. I've always gotten the name on that one mixed up. Tall grower, not twigy, not much rebloom. Had it for a while, too, so I don't think maturity is the issue.

I ordered Safrano and Kronprincessin Viktoria. Thanks for your feedback. Greybird, I always have ordered from Chamblees. This order ended up being Chamblees, but the one a few weeks ago was from ARE. I love both nurseries. The more I looked at Isabella Sprunt, the more I thought about SDLM and realized that KV was much like SDLM.

Weathersby, is the poor rose Star of the Republic, and you recommend Stephen Austin?

I am still looking at those roses.

I hope you don't mind me highjacking your thread but I'd like to ask everyone how many petals do these roses have?

 o
RE: Isabella Sprunt or Safrano

Peggy, The vast majority of the blooms my 'Safrano' produces are double, but just barely -- semi-double is probably the most apt description (abt 20 petals, I'd guess). Some times, however, a very beautiful fully double bloom appears. When, years ago, I noticed the first such bloom, I thought for sure I had a sport. I didn't.

I really should have moved my 'Safrano' long ago because it gets full sun all day long. If you're considering adding it to your Florida garden, consider giving it afternoon shade. Otherwise, the color fades quickly & blooms don't last very long.
