My New Austins

I drove over to Angel Gardens yesterday to pick up my new E.
Veyrat Hermanos. I was so excited to finally have it!

Pam had just gotten in hundreds of bare root David Austins and Weeks roses, so of course I had to investigate the Austins.. I finally chose Princess Alexandra of Kent and a new one for me,
Princess Anne. There was a brand new release called Wollerton Hall that was just gorgeous; a very light, creamy apricot. Unfortunately, the Austin Catalog doesn't have it rated for my hot humid summers, so I didn't get it.

Does anyone have any experience with either Princess Alexandra of Kent or Princess Anne in the South?

I want to get Lichfield Angel and Wisely next. Does anyone grow them down here?

Thanks.
Gracin

PAOK is FABULOUS!!!! I adore it.

'Lichfield Angel' is pretty with excellent disease resistance, but stingy, and little fragrance. There are better choices IMO.

Gracin - it will be nice to compare notes in future as I just ordered PAOK, Princess Anne and Wollerton Old Hall (along with Lady Emma Hamilton and WS 2000)!

Hoovb - I wanted to say that I very much enjoy your blog. Your comments there on PAOK convinced me to get it :-)

Cheers,
Jo

I have Princess Alexandra of Kent. It does really well here and at times makes a nice full bush. It has pretty good blackspot resistance but goes through spells like most of my roses in the summer. The flowers are very large and change from a warm pink to a cooler pink.

I do not share your prudence, so I ordered Wollerton Old Hall this year. It should be here tomorrow according to FedEx. Wish me luck :)

Thank you hoovb and amberroses for the good reports about
PAOK. Hoovb, what would you choose over Lichfield Angel?

Jo - we have such similar taste! I also like WS 2000, but I have 3 Tradescants. It will be interesting to compare notes. I look foward to it.
Amberroses, I'm so pleased to hear that you went for Wollerton Old Hall. If it does well for you, then I can get it. I think it's so beautiful. But then, aren't all Austins ?

Hard to say, no black spot pressure here like there is in Florida. I would say 'Bolero', but I do not think it is resistant. Perhaps a Tea or China would hold up better to humidity, like 'Westside Road Cream Tea' or 'Ducher'?

If you want a white Austin try Windermere. Others have recommended it to me and it was great in my yard last year. In the heat the blooms a little less full and the petals get pointy. I think the pointy petals are pretty in their own way.

Yes, I do want a white Austin. I will look into Windermere.
Thanks to both of you for the suggestions

'Windermere' here is a constant bloomer, delicious luscious fragrance, rust and mildew free. Tall willowy growth (in all day full sun). Not too wide. Columnar habit which is not common for an Austin.

The flaw to me is that the flowers are very short lived, just two to two and a half days. Here it is a pale apricot fading to ivory rather than white. Except for the short life of the flowers a good rose.

Hi Gracin! I thought I'd check in with you and ask how your new Austins are doing.

Here's my Princess Alexandra of Kent - I just had to share! I got her bareroot early March and she's been healthy so far although it's been warmer than usual and powdery mildew and cercospora, which are rampant in my garden at this time of year, have been held at bay.

Cheers,
Jo

And, here's Princess Anne. I am glad I don't have to choose between POAK and her because I wouldn't be able to. The picture doesn't do her justice.

They both look great! Thanks Jo for those pics

Bolero is very BS-resistant for my humid and rainy weather. I exchange roses with a guy in California. Whatever mildew or rust in his dry climate do great in my wet clay. Whatever Black spots here, like the mini-roses, I ship to him ... they do great in his dry climate. My climate is just the opposite of CA, so roses-exchange work well.

Aside from the Austin roses...E. Veyrat Hermanos is so lovely!

Strawberry - Bolero has been on my want list for a few years now. You have a good thing going there with your plant exchange!

Zjw - E. V. Hermanos is indeed lovely. Do you grow it? How badly does it ball?

Oh my, Jo.

They look fantastic! Super Fantastic! Mine are very healthy, but not the number of blooms that you have.
Guess I'd best give them some fertilizer.
I also would have a hard time choosing between the two of them, but push come to shove, I would have to keep POAK.
Austins are tough to beat for beauty!

Thanks for sharing!
Gracin

I don't grow it...but I've lusted after it for a while. I saw it at the Sacramento Cemetery in April- the colors are so beautiful and they're so nicely scented! I want it!
