I have taken over pruning my mother's roses (and probably helping maintain her garden in general) this year as she can no longer do all of it. She has some fine old treasures with no names (mostly hybrid teas) on their own roots collected many years ago but also more modern, grafted hybrid teas. Late yesterday, I hacked my way through a jungle of Himalayan blackberry to where a grafted Don Juan climber was planted a few years ago. A lot of what is there (and there is a lot there!), I think, is Dr. Huey, but I didn't have enough time left to start sorting it out. Few leaves as yet to give clues about what was what, but what was very noticeable were HUGE (like, 1"+ diameter) yellow-orange hips on much of the lower growth. I've looked in vain, so far, for photos of either Dr. Huey's or Don Juan's hips on the web to help me tackle this thing next weekend. My question: does Dr. Huey have gigantic orange hips or are these more likely to be Don Juan's? (or, heaven forbid, do both have them?) Grateful for any help,

The Peaceful Habitations website's info on Dr. Huey said no hips were observed; numerous sites say Don Juan has showy yellow hips, although I didn't look for pictures. So glad you're able to help your mom, Debbie.

My Don Juans have very large hips. I've never noticed any on Dr. Huey.
|
This sounds like good news: not only has Don Juan survived the melee in that corner but I will have some help sorting out what is what when I go back. Doing further research I came across a post on a rose breeder's forum where one member claimed to have a hip with seeds set on Dr. Huey and other members had the opinion that he must have mis-labelled the seed plant because Dr. Huey is considered infertile both ways. This backs up Peaceful Habitations' somewhat open-ended "none observed" statement. Thank you harborrose and Floridarosez!

Not only are Don Juan's hips large, it characteristically puts several of the seeds OUTSIDE the entrance to the hip. That's not unique to DJ, but it's unusual enough, and consistent enough, that I'd suggest you check the hips for some of those visible seeds, and that may "clinch" the ID for you.

Thank you, Dr. Manners, for that tip and tidbit. I am happy to know about the possibility of seeing this, which is interesting per se.

Gotta love the topic of this post. Roses and Horses - similar in that big hips are appreciated in both!!!
