still blooming...

Spring is coming, and my garden is bursting out in vrs flowers - narcissus, hellebores, camellias, crocus, rhododendrons, & various bulbs. The earliest once blooming roses (banksia lutea and Belle Portugaise) are about to start, but haven't quite yet.

However, my tea roses Rosa Delizy and Dr. Joseph Schwartz, and my Cl Iceberg, have been blooming continuously since their Fall flush started in Oct, and are still blooming, and show no signs of stopping! I have not even fed any of these since last Winter. Does anyone else have roses which have just ignored Winter and kept blooming for the last 4-5 months?

Jackie

Almost . . .

'Mme. Lombard' has had flush after flush, and is just starting a new one. G. Nabonnand appears to have loved our record-cold winter, and has bloomed through most of it, and there have been at least a few blooms of Grandmother's Hat around, most of the time.

The most-consistent bloomers here have been the Chinas.
White Pearl In Red Dragon's Mouth, The China From Adina, Elisabeth's China (shown here, strangely pale, in cold weather), and Louis Philippe.

My bloomingest roses are Marie Pavie' and Perle d'Or. They are forming buds for the next flush as the previous one winds down. The only time they have nothing on them is when I have just pruned them.

General Schablikine, Climbing Pinkie, Mrs. BR Cant, Spice, Clotilde Soupert, Louis Philippe, Red Smith's Parrish and those are just a few that have said ok, cold temps, no problem....let's all knock on wood....it ain't over till its over....

Here is a picture I took of Dr. Joseph Schwartz 5 minutes ago - it is said to be a sport of Duchesse de Brabant, and certainly looks as if this is true -

It's rare that 'Souvenir de la Malmaison' doesn't have at least a few blossoms during the winter, though it's definitely more of a "cycle" bloomer than a continuous one. 'Hermosa' is rarely bloomless; same with 'Snowbird'. 'Archiduc Charles' is generous through winter, as are two nameless Teas, one "red," one pink ("nameless" two times over: first they were foundlings; then the labels with their study names bleached out). Floribunda 'Faberge' doesn't know how to stop. Finally, as one might hope, 'Winter Magic' and its sport 'Cafe Ole' keep production up during the winter.

Today, exquisite flowers on 'Mrs. B. R. Cant' and 'Souvenir de la Malmaison'. Biggest flush is 'Belinda's Dream' of course.

I have in flower, crocus, narcissus, antirrhinums, hellebores, agaranthemums, dianthus, osteospermums, pansies, pelargoniums, cyclamen, Tibouchina urvilleana, hibiscus, Verbena x hybrida, Abutilons, Cestrum newellii, Justicia branegeeana, Hardenbergia violacea, alstromerias, fuchsias, sweet violets, Felicia amelliodes, Russelia equisetiformis and various succulents.

Of the roses, Archduc Joseph, Blush noisette, Marechal Niel, Sombreuil, Teasing Georgia, Iceberg, and Gruss an Aachen have all produced a number of blooms throughout the winter.
But, Lady Emma Hamilton, Colombian Climber and Archduke Charles are in a different league. They don't seem to know that it is winter. They have all kept on producing full flushes throughout.

Archduke Charles on the 31st January.

I know that to you people living in California and other mediterranean climates, that this list is normal, but to me as a relative newcomer to this climate, I am still filled with wonder and awe at the largesse of flowers during winter.
