What can you tell me about the Tea rose 'Duquesa'?

Posted by gardennatlanta z7atlantaGA (My Page) on

I've not heard very much about this rose at all. All I know is that HMF says it's from a cross between Duchesse de Brabant and Mons. Tillier. I've heard it's "disease resitant" but we all know that can mean a lot of things.

Can anyone tell me anything about her? Mature size? Fragrance? Black spot resitance? Amount of rebloom?

Thanks. Jeff

Here is a link that might be useful: Duquesa at HMF

I just remember the biding frenzy for this rose at the HRF El Cerrito conference in 2005. It went for hundreds of dollars, and I just hoped that whoever got it didn't lose it! Haven't seen a mature plant. Does Vintage have it for sale? I know that it was in their collection. promises to be a very nice rose.

Anita, Thanks for replying. I'm hoping it's a good one since I decided to go ahead and order it from Rose Petals Nursery in FL. (Vintage has it only custom root but what they say about it makes it sound very good--I'm really excited, now!) Since it seems kind of rare, I thought it would be cool to have something different in my garden. I'm sure I'll post on how she's doing in a few years. Jeff

From what I can tell Duquesa is not a tea for the front of a bed. Mine has only actually been planted for one summer and it does none of that first year tea slow motion growth while it puts out more roots. The growth is strong right from the start and the bush is certainly a balanced looking grower with no canes growing off in odd directions.

The leaves are much more like Mons. Tillier rather than the Duchess being darker in color but more slender. The blooms are very much like Duchess de Brabant but with more petals and they darken in the sun to a coppery pink.

The scent is quite nice, not quite the same tea scent as Mons. Tillier. Perhaps a little more of a fruity note to it.

I posted pictures on my Facebook page.

Shot at HMF

I should have mentioned that the shot of Duquesa at HMF is from my plant. I am truly looking forward to posting new shots this summer as the bush grows larger.

The breeder is Jim Turner of the Bay Area.

I am lusting for this rose, not that I have any place for it at home (and we plant old roses in the cemetery, not new ones). Lance, where did you get it?

Vintage Gardens.

I just looked on HMF. Only Rose Petals Nursery in FL is listed. That's where I am getting mine. I don't think they ship to CA, though.

I wonder why no one seems to carry it. You'd think Jim Turner, the breeder would want folks to buy it. Hmm. Anyone?

Like Anita, I remember the bidding for this in El Cerrito.
For the present, Vintage lists Duquesa as Custom Propagation.

If the foliage inclines more to Mons. Tillier (disease-free here) than to Duchesse de Brabant (mildews here) I am more interested in it. OTOH, Custom Propagation is above my touch.
But it DOES seem like something that should be more widely available (grumble, grumble).

How cool, Jeff, that you're buying from my favorite neighborhood nursery (albeit 45 miles away). This rose really tempted me. Sounds like it grows just like MT. I just can't make up my mind.
