Sombreiul and Le Vesuve

I'm gradually replacing my awful Bermuda lawn with rose and perrenial beds. How will Sombreuil and Le Vesuve look planted next to each other in a circular front yard bed? I live out in the country , but in a subdivision. I have no Hoa. Will this look messy when leafless and not blooming in the winter? Thanks in advance!

I grow both of these roses, but here in zone 9 they both remain evergreen all year.

They have very different growth habits. Le Vesuve will grow into a large shrub shape (here 8 ft tall by 8 ft wide by 6-8 ft deep). It has a china type growth - twiggy canes branching off at all sorts of odd angles, until it builds up a large mass. Blooms all of the time - I love it.

Sombreuil is a serious climber, with very stiff large long canes. We have encouraged our Sombreuil to climb up our house (bad habit of mine), and at the moment it has grown over its 6 ft wide 8 ft high arch onto the house. After hitting the house at about the top of the first story, it has grown all the way up to the roof, which is 3 1/2 stories off the ground!

So, I am not sure I would plant them in the same bed, unless I had a very strong (it is heavy) climbing structure for Sombreuil, and was willing to spend a lot of time containing it (its thorns are vicious). Better to grow it somewhere where it can climb happily.

Thanks Jackie. In Texas we have a long growing season. My Le Vesuve will probably get massive as well. I live in a ranch type house so cannot grow Sombreuil against the wall. I don't want to encourage snakes! Yikes. I guess I'll have Le Vesuve in a bed of her own and grow some other white in the opposite bed. I want to grow a Miami Crepe myrtle (light pink flowers). I guess I'll wait until she has some height and let Sombreuil grow into her. Many thanks.

Shopshops, I don't grow Le Vesuve, but here is my Sombreuil over an arbour. It takes an awful lot of effort to contain it there. It wants to get much bigger. It is one of my favourites, so I put up with having to hack it back continuously. I have allowed some of it into the pomegranate tree next to it. It will probably take that over too.
It is not a rose for a small area.

Just checking that you know that there is a Sombreuil that is a large-flower climber that people are discussing here, but there is also a Mademoiselle de Sombreuil that is a different plant and is a Tea rose. I would think the tea rose version which is not climbing would be a natural for Texas and do quite well in a bed with the china Le Vesuve.

Here is a link that might be useful: Mlle. de Sombreuil

Daisy- that is one of the prettiest examples of what I think of as a Mediteranian-Cottage style patio. Just gorgeous. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Jacqueline, Daisy and subk. Whew! You guys saved me from myself. There is no way my front yard would contain Sombreuil without some type of structure. I have an easement and cannot build anything of this sort.

Daisy I want to pack up and move to Crete after seeing your garden! You have been blessed with excellent taste. Well done. Just beautiful!

Subk I will further look into this shrub form. The flowers look exquisite ! Thanks for sharing the link. This may very well become my 100th rose when I purchase it in the fall.
Thanks so much guys!
