Best non-US old garden rose nurseries?

**APOLOGIES FOR DUPLICATE POSTING**
(I accidentally posted this in the gallery instead of where it belongs--sorry about that!!)

For my own nerdly amusement, I'm trying to compile a list of Chinas, Teas, and Bourbons currently in cultivation.

I've noodled around the online catalogs of (what I think of as) the main US nurseries for antique roses--but what about abroad?

I've stumbled on:
-- Roseraie du Desert
-- Schuett
-- Le Rose di Posillipo

But presumably there are more.

As a side note, I'd be interested to know which--if any--are willing to ship to the US. But mostly I just want to know that they exist.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Many European sources also sell OGRs, whether they specialize in them or offer than in addition to more recent introductions. The Lens Nursery in Belgium, Bierkreek in The Netherlands, 16 eichen in Germany, and quite a few others, also offer OGRs. Most will ship to the US, but it is NOT worth the hassle and expense of the import permit and governmental restrictions currently in place. Even worse, we can not import ANY plant material from the European Union due to the presence of specific pests. If you're interested in the why of it all, please see the linked thread below. You'll find it all there, including the current specific restrictions against importing in to the US.

You can save yourself a great deal of time and effort by either purchasing the Combined Rose List from Peter Schneider, where he lists all the roses available from catalogs which have been submitted to him and references which catalogs they appear in. The list also indicates who ships to the US. The easiest way would be to become a premium member of Help Me Find - Roses and do an Advanced Search for the class types you're interested in. That will show which have been most recently listed by the nurseries, which nurseries listed them, and then provide all pertinent information about the specific nurseries. Have fun! Kim

Thanks for the wealth of information, Kim! Especially the Combined Rose List.

Though, I have to admit, I rather enjoy wading through the catalogs myself--it's more like window shopping than work--even if it is reinventing the wheel.

Too bad about the difficulty/impossibility importing, though. It's so depressing to know that any marvelous gems that are discovered overseas are unlikely to make their way here. I hope there is still some conduit open at least to nurseries or public gardens.

Loubert is one of my favourites. They have a fantastic collection, and the quality of their plants is superb. However their computer site is a bit awkward to use, in my opinion.
I know how you feel about the rose import-export thing. There are a lot of roses that seem to be available only in the U.S.that I would love to have, but importing from the US to Europe is just as expensive and difficult...bart

You're welcome. Glad I could help. You know, you can accomplish the same thing with Help Me Find as you can the Combined Rose List. The "Buy From" Tab gives you the same information as you get in the list in the CRL.

Fortunately, because it imposes the same safety restrictions upon commercial importers as it does home importers, everyone is subject to the same limitations. Unfortunately, it does limit what you can obtain, but given the potential damages, I'll live with it. Kim

Don't forget Trevor White and Peter Beales in the U.K.

Rose Barni in Italy specializes in teas and chinas. Most European nurseries will offer old garden roses along the moderns. There is no great divide between classes over here. Even a firm like David Austin has a good selection of OGR's. A good Serbian nursery is Petrovic Roses. Serbia is not yet a member of the EU so perhaps they will ship to the US without hassle. But I suppose your roses will still have to be in quarantine when they reach the US.

Vintage Gardens in CA imported roses from Loubert and another nursery in France and quarantined them for two years and this spring they'll be available. Some of us ordered them two years ago, and should find out in March which of them grew and prospered and which didn't make it. Whatever wasn't ordered then will presumably be available to the general public. Many of them are tea roses. Practically all of them have not been available before, although I spotted Lady Mary Currie on the Rogue Valley list which is one of the French teas. Not sure how they were able to acquire that rose.

This is terrific information! Thanks so much, everyone! I'm especially looking forward to practicing my very rusty Italian on the Rose Barni site.
