'Souvenir du Docteur Jamain' at Annie's

There were a half-dozen gallon-size, own-root plants labelled 'Souvenir du Docteur Jamain' available at Annie's Annuals nursery/growing grounds in Richmond today for $10. Worth mentioning because no U.S. sources currently listed on HMF except Vintage.

Unfortunately, she does not list this one in her mail order catalog. Typically, a small number of plants of this variety will show up on the benches maybe once or twice a year. I succumbed this time because a spot for a small climber with lots of afternoon shade has opened up with amenable companions all around (plus there was that wonderful ode to the variety that Odinthor wrote last year...). Buds and leaves resemble those in photos available on the web, though no blooms were open yet on any of the plants.

That's a GREAT price for nice-sized plants, but there are US sources for that rose listed on HMF -- Angel Gardens, Heirloom Roses, Rogue Valley Roses and Roses Unlimited. I look forward to seeing mine wake up this Spring -- it's planted to grow as a climber against the white railing on my front porch.

Score, Catspa!! I yearn for another SdDJ. Deep purple wine-colored fluffy blooms. Deep decadent old rose scent. Yummy goodness on an octopus....which fortunately makes a lovely manageable partial shade climber. A bit blackspotty here in PDX, but who isn't? I do have a spot available on a shady trellis.... Please post pics when he blooms. It may stave off another over my budget, no space in the yard rose purchase. Carol

Thanks, Chris -- I looked again and, for some reason when I looked at "all nurseries" on HMF, the setting was not on "all countries". I was thinking it was odd in this case... I am glad this is not yet another variety headed to oblivion in the U.S. (have enough of those in my collection and it makes me sad, on reflection).

Will do, Carol, and happy to hear your appreciation of this rose -- this is only my second hybrid perpetual. I have a heavily virused clone of Ulrich Brunner Fils that, despite that, does very well for me and hope SdDJ does too.

As promised, Carol, here are pics of first bloom on the plant I got at Annie's last week. It's velvety dark red and smells heavily of damask -- looks about right for SdDJ, I think.

Ah, yes! That's just how I remember him. Isn't he heavenly? Thank you for posting some dark red HP porn...I mean pics, Catspa. Oooo, I may just begin another affair with him in my current garden. Carol

Catspa, I got SDJ from Rogue Valley last fall and it's been nothing but mildew for me. I hope yours fairs better.

Oh wow and how lucky to find that one there.

What a pretty rose

I love the color. I have a new General Jacqueminot coming along in a better location. It has a heavenly fragrance also. I think SdDJ might be a darker red.

ARE used to have him, and I had one, but he warranted a "Deuil" of his own in three years time... So, I now have a new one from RVR.
