Hello. I received one cane of La Reine last August. She remains one cane. I've heard she's hard to get going. Anyone have an experience to share? Thanks. Susan
Follow-Up Postings:

It must be pretty easy to root -- it's one of the first things we were able to propagate. Jeri

I would cut it down a bit, work in compost and alfalfa meal, give it a good mulching and watering and see if it throws up some basal canes. Ingrid
|
If it's a just starting out rooted cane I'd just be patient. It's going to take time for it to build a root ball so it can support more canes.

Just wait. This rose will make plenty of canes when the roots get bigger. Jeri is right. A bigger La Reine gets wider and wider every year. If you get a long cane then stick it down to the ground and cover it. Soon you will have some new canes starting where it touched down. I know it's small now, but if the soil it good, it will grow plenty of canes in time.

Has anyone had success taking a cutting of La Reine & planting directly into the ground? I did this this a few months ago. I am observing a plant a few inches tall. The birds, soil, manure, or my mulch have gifted me unplanned seedlings, weeds, wildflowers. However; I did buy & plant the salvia 'Caradonna' seeds.

Mauvegirl, you will like 'Caradonna'. I find it to be an outstanding salvia. Poorbutroserich, do give 'La Reine' more time. I have 'Barbara's Pasture Rose', thought to be 'La Reine', a variant clone of 'La Reine', or possibly a seedling of 'La Reine'. It took longer than I expected but is a wonderful rose now. (In fact, I grow two of it, and kept them both this past month when I was busy reducing the number of rose plants I grow by 30%. Truth is that I kept nearly all of my rose multiples while getting rid of single plants of less wonderful roses.) Folly
