Does the Portland Rose Garden have OGRs?

I'm an hour from the garden and visited once when I didn't garden yet and knew nothing of roses. I'd like to visit this spring when the once bloomers and old roses will be blooming. But I thought I heard once that it mostly has hybrid teas and the more modern varieties. I'm not interested in them. Anyone been there and know what is growing there?

I am not familiar with the Portland Rose Garden, but 25 miles South of Portland in St. Paul, Oregon is Heirloom Roses, and they have fantastic huge display gardens which feature lots of old roses.

From what I see on the Park website there are some Hybrid Perpetuals and Polyanthas but the emphasis is on newer roses. You can download a PDF of their rose list and see.

In my opinion Washington Park is worth a visit anyway if you are in the area. Their Japanese Garden is said to be the finest one in the US.

Here is a link that might be useful: Washington Park International Rose Test Garden

Last time I was there, not so much. I may have to begin volunteering...and attempting to influence future plantings! :-)

Thanks for the info. Jackie, I was at Heirloom last August and missed most of the old roses. They have a huge tunnel with spring bloomers completely covering it for 60 feet perhaps? I'm sure it's glorious in the spring. I've been doing some research on a few historic rose collections in my area and will try to visit at the right time. I'm fascinated with old roses and the Oregon trail connection. I grew up in a home built in the early 1900's and there was a big yellow rose growing on the side. I can remember smelling it every summer. My mother wasn't much of a gardener and never tended it. My parents sold the house and the yard was destroyed. I'm sad today thinking about what that rose might have been.

Washington Park, regardless of the rose garden, is a REALLY lovely place, well worth a visit. As for the roses, the vast majority of them are modern Hybrid Teas. It isn't just a "rose garden", it's a rose TEST garden- the oldest of it's kind in the country- and it also functions as a testing ground for AARS, which explains why "old" roses don't have much a presence there. There is one small planting of them, but it isn't much. It's still a beautiful place to visit, especially during May and June.
Heirloom Roses doesn't have nearly as many OGR plantings as you would expect, but it's a great place too see David Austin and English Heritage roses, and every famous HT introduced in the last 50 years.

Melody, where was your home with the yellow rose? Was it here in OR? It may have been a Harrison's Yellow if it was a once bloomer. That variety traveled across the country with many settlers. Even though it's called the Yellow Rose of TX, it came from the east coast and doesn't really grow well in most parts TX. The end of the OR Trail is OR City where I used to teach. (I live in PDX.) I hunted for OGRs there when I had spare moments, but the pickings were slim. Whenever I pass abandoned homes in rural areas I like to stop and snoop around for remains of anything antique and flowering. Carol

Carol, I grew up in Bend. I'm in Salem now. I looked up Harrison's Yellow on HMF and it does look very like what I remember. I think it was a once bloomer. Rose hunting sounds like a great past time! I saw an abandoned house out in the country last year. I'll have to drive past this spring and see what's there.

Melody, I have been told by several rose-loving friends that there is a heritage rose garden at the O. O. Howard house at Ft. Vancouver, across the river from Portland. I hope to see for myself in early June this year! Gean
