Is Opal Brunner thornless?

Yesterday I was untangling a Cl American Beauty rose from the Opal Brunner growing next to it. The Cl American Beauty has tons of small prickles, and long grabby arms which were all trying to go home with me.

I finally realized that the Opal Brunner was not sticking to me. I got 2 of them from Vintage Gardens - they are pretty mature now - it was 7-8 years ago. I just went out and looked at them both, and I could not find a trace of a thorn on either of them, except those prickles on the back of the leaves.

So, I was wondering - does anyone know if this rose is thornless? People are always asking about thornless roses, and this climbing polyantha is so pretty, I thought that would be good to know.

RE: Is Opal Brunner thornless?

Yes, Jackie, Opal is pretty prickle-free. She can, and does, throw some canes with prickles but can also be quite smooth. I've grown her since the mid eighties and have enjoyed her very much. Slight mildew has been the only health issue with her in the three gardens I've had her, and then only when conditions were really heavy for the disease. She's fertile, too. I'm raising seedlings from several crosses I used her for last year. Opal is a nice rose. I "discovered" her in the Study Plot at The Huntington all those years ago and haven't wanted to be without her since. I'm glad you have her. Kim
