Hadn't planned any spring orders, but....

I ordered mosses (not many carry them), a couple of old HTs & floribundas, several OGRs I don't recall others carrying.

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

8. Forest Ranch Pompon -- This is a WONDERFUL rose for us in CA. In my cooler climate, it is quite poiple -- but does not seem to have chlorosis problems.

10. Pulich Children -- This is a little more fussy, but completely worth it. It gets late-season rust, but I didn't have to defoliate it, because it dropped all of its leaves, which blew away.

13. Dr. Kelley -- IIRC, this appears to be 'Paul Neyron.' But it's a really nice P.N. :-)

14. Benny Lopez -- Don't know what he is, but he's a wonderful rose here. In our unusually cold winter, his old leaves blew away, and he's just getting new ones. Found in Santa Barbara by a man named Benny Lopez. It appears to be a Damask -- but we know not which Damask.

Jeri

Here is "Benny Lopez"

Hard to keep it under a gazillion $s/plants.

Panachee d'Orleans
Heidi Moss

Thanks for the into Jeri :) I'm really excited about getting them, and that picture of Benny Lopez in wonderful! Even if "Dr. Kelley" is Paul Neyron, the good news is that i'm one of the people who really loves their Paul Neyron. He does really well for me! It will be interesting to compare them in person...

Bluegirl, you have a lot of nice choices too! Maybe some more trades in our future once they get established!

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

Bluegirl, 'Le Pactole' is a Tea Rose, and continuous-blooming.

Take care where you plant her, because she's a BIG GIRL!
Did you know that the Pactole (or Pactolus) is the river in Asia Minor where King Midas is said to have washed away the curse of the Golden Touch. The sand along her banks is said to sparkle with flecks of gold.

She's a wonderful rose, which was once thought to be extinct. We must thank Fred Boutin for re-discovering her. (See below)

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

When I got the email, I was tempted several times to go through their available list and "try to find a few more." But I just can't bring myself to do it.

I'm already somewhat intimidated by the fact that I have about 60 coming starting next month, and that's already more than I can fit in the ground. Some I know are going to be pot-pets, others are "multiple alternatives" for the same spots, and I really don't have any more "spots."

I have plans to have a little collection starting of very fragrant dark-red or crimson Hybrid Teas, but don't want to focus on pot-pets until after the potted-up bands go into the ground. I snagged a few which were available as VID, but missed out on a few others. So if the Vintage inventory won't be available by the new group taking it over, I'll have to look elsewhere.

ANYWAY.....my order from Vintage coming next month will be (as they list them):

Bourbons:
Mlle Blanche Lafitte
Mme Dore
Sophie's Perpetual
Souvenir de la Malmaison

Gallicas:
Belle de Crecy
Duchesse de Montebello
Georges Vibert
Sissinghurst Castle
Superb Tuscan
Tricolore de Flandre

Hybrid Chinas:
Duchesse d'Angouleme
Nouveau Monde

Hybrid Perpetuals:
Georg Arends
Monsieur Boncenne
Souvenir du Dr. Jamain

Hybrid Teas:
Crimson Glory (VID)
Lemon Spice (VID)
Mirandy (VID)
Night ( aka Lady Sackville)
Oklahoma (VID)

Musks:
Reverend Seidel
Rosa Moschata

Polyanthas:
Marie Pavie

Portlands:
Blanc de Vibert
Rose du Roi (original)

Teas:
Lady Hillingdon
Spice

Tea-Noisettes:
Jaune Desprez

:-)

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

My, you all have such excellent taste :)

Tammy: oho! you betcha!

Jeri: thanks for the info--I love mythology but didn't recall the name. Remember vaguely something about how people would lay sheep fleeces in some river (the Pactole I suppose) to collect gold dust, & that may be how the legend of the golden fleece came about. Neat. I'm hoping she doesn't quite reach the epic size of CA plants.

Christopher: I haven't been able to have gallicas previously but might try again in this new zone.

I haven't gotten confirmation yet, bet they are overwhelmed with the last desperate scramble for orders. I always get a site-crash after typing in all the info & then have to e-mail the order.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

Its wonderful to see these large orders and the great spread of choices. Between all of us, it seems everything will find a home. I have some 40 on order from the fall and just added another 16. Please dont forget to post your lists on HMF.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

Darn, I was in the middle of an order and I got the error. I hope I remember what I ordered! Or it is saved. I know I ordered Papa Hemray. I had it from Ashdown in a pot and it was lovely. DH dumped a whole bunch of alfalfa on it and killed it. I didn't notice in time that he virtually buried it. I think he does that so I don't ask him to help me with the roses, LOL.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

Where do you get the available list?

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I'm afraid to say what I ordered yesterday...1 apparently already sold out between now and then and I've not had order confirmation yet. :: fingers crossed :: I ordered 5 assuming at least 1 would not make it to the pkg...

Buford, I had tons of order errors yesterday...my order was still there though even a couple hours later after I had threw my hands up and given up. Try again!

I feel so silly that I waited til it was literally too late to order from Vintage...so my "last" Vintage order is also my 1st.

And I really really wanted Princesse de Lamballé too :*( Alas...

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I actually have four orders from over the past few months but here is the (sob) last one.
Pompon Blanc Parfait
Cumberland Belle
William Allen Richardson.
Since Vinatge is open through the end of June I might have to break down one more time.
Don't foget for those of you who live near this will also be the last Vintage sale at The Celebration of Old Roses.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

mountainrose, just go to vintagegardens.com.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I ordered what was on my wish list for next year.

Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria - HT Cl
First Love- HT
Tiffany VID- HT
Pink Parfait VID- HT
Valentine VID- FL
Yvonne Rabier- Poly
Lullaby-Poly
Duchesse de Rohan- Port

I out that order in right away so I could have the best chance of getting them. I'm looking over the roses now for a second order. I've always wanted a Lamarque but am unsure of which one I should buy. What is the difference between the southern and California Lamarques?

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

La Rubanée
Alain Blanchard
Ville de Toulouse
Smith's Parish
Serratipetala
Caroubier
Cramoisi Picoté
Duchesse de Montebello

I also thought my rose ordering was finished for the season. Excepting for Smith's Parish, I haven't done very much research on these roses. Would love to hear others' experiences with them and see photos.

Thank you, Tammy. I looked through some of the roses I wasn't familiar with that you listed and was drawn to order more than four because of Serratipetala.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

Right now it is:

Ferndale's Red China
Chaucer
Grandmother's Hat
Mutabalis

I suspect I will add four more, and I have a couple of the French imports.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I just added Paprika and Ruga to my earlier order.

The availability lists in some categories are shrinking rapidly!

Roses from Vintage which are offered elsewhere are still cheaper from VG than from many other places, especially with the 10% discount for HMF or rose organization membership.

Will the Vintage Gardens collection ever be for sale again?
Will the collection be maintained?

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

The collection will be maintained by Friends of Vintage Roses.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I'm glad that the collection will survive.

Roses were becoming "custom root only" while I was making my order!

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

My garden is full; ordering now means that I'm making the unpleasant gamble that some of the roses I already have will either die or displease me and need to be replaced. But I submitted one small order--haven't gotten a confirmation yet, so don't know what I'll end up with (I included two alternates).

Of the roses I ordered, two were repeats:

--'Ramona'. I had this for many years. It died either of rather young old age or, more likely, of the accursed die-back disease which wiped out much of my collection. It's a wonderful rose with a personality all its own. It had always been the first to bloom, often during our wet and windy season so that its petals--a startling cerise on one side, off-white on the other--would often be scattered on the ground rather than forming flowers on the plant. Because it's "different," it's rather hard to place. Still, after several years of not having it, I find myself yearning again for its special beauties . . . and so ordered it lest I never be able to order it again.

--'Lady Ann Kidwell' was also a repeat. With much regret, I took out a beautiful, healthy bush when its site became just too shady because of the dense growth of an olive tree; a Fuchsia 'President Walter Mario' (a very fine Fuchsia, by the way!) now resides in its place. 'Lady Ann Kidwell' impressed me in several ways; one beauty no one else seems to mention is its big orange hips dotting the bush most attractively. I had to have it again.

--'Climbing Pasadena Tournament' rode onto my order on the coattails and virtues of its similar kin 'Lady Ann Kidwell'.

And finally

--'Dr. Lande', or at least what is sold as 'Dr. Lande' (I'm not so sure that what Vintage has *isn't* indeed the real thing; but I look forward to having it in my garden to study).

There were also two alternates which I won't mention because they might comprise, with a few others, a second "last" order from Vintage . . . We'll see!

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I ordered four more this evening.

Show Garden, a recently rediscovered hardy climber by Brownell, fancy that! I can only hope I am first in line.

Spartan VID
Dupuy-Jamain
Panachee d'Orleans

And some alternates. I had to order by email. I expect it will be awhile before I receive confirmation.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I have a big list on hold, and am perusing y'all's. don't know where to put any of them though! I received a big order late last summer and nursed many through t he winter which I am putting out. I did order the catalogue, but trying to firm up this last order. Oh, I much prefer to live in denial.

How will these be maintained by Friends of..., Mendocino rose? Does this mean the plants will be kept alive or will they too be propagated? If so, for resale? I know, or presume, not as an organized basis, but just trying to learn more about this.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I wonder if people who *aren't* ordering see some outstanding but neglected roses among the currently available roses on Vintage's list which they would like to recommend to people's attention...? (I won't mention well-known and revered roses still available.) Such as:

--'La France de '89'. Hiding among the HT Climbers on Vintage's listing, this is a wonderful rose which has the misfortune of a name which was too clever and off-putting because the name is trying to capitalize on the popularity of 'La France' (though "officially" it was trying to call to mind revolutionary France of 1789). The foliage is beautiful, the growth is sturdy, the flowers are big and shaggy and fragrant.

--'Faberge'. I never tire of praising this great Floribunda. If it has any fault, it's just that its fragrance could be stronger. The pic at Vintage is misleading; go to HMF for a better idea of what it looks like.

--'Gold Cup'. Another Floribunda, this time with perfect leaves and luscious golden yellow flowers, perfectly formed.

--'Hermann Schmidt' is a Climbing Polyantha of an exciting violet-red which enhances all the other colors of the roses around it. The leaves are beautiful, and can color very nicely in the Fall.

--'Leprechaun', a Floribunda in which flowers of a beautiful pure yellow go to a beautiful red, and have a delicious fragrance.

--'Nimbus'. Yet another Floribunda, the color being an intriguing warm lavender. It seems as if it's always blooming!

--'Robinette'. This Rambler from Ralph Moore is truly charming. OK, I'll grant you that its sweetly-innocent cherry-red single flowers are rather fleeting; but the little sealing-wax red hips are decorative for many months, and are held in such a way that I think they'd be good for those interested in flower arranging.

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

My last order from Vintage arrived in October. All bands. I take multiple factors into account when adding plants to my garden, and thinking of losing Vintage gave more weight to those unavailable anywhere else. For this last order I looked at plants I like, the likelihood a rose would do well in my growing conditions (mediterranean climate, low water/fertilizer(fish emulsion)/mulch, ability to play nice with California natives, microclimates available in my yard), color, fragrance, pleasing growth habit, genetic diversity (don't want to grow too many very closely related roses as what might fell one I don't want to hit all/most of my roses), and endangered status per HMF (for instance roses on 10 or fewer garden listings in the US).

October arrivals:

Grace de Monaco (ht)
Julia Mannering (eglantine)
Micrugosa alba (species cross)
Princess Marie (rambler)
Francois Foucard (rambler)
Alba Odorata (hybrid bracteata)

Grace de Monaco is a beautiful, old style hybrid tea, rather large in size, bushy, and with fragrant, elegant blooms very befitting her namesake Princess Grace who is reported to have said this was her favorite wedding present. Saw GdM at Eurodesert and made a note to get her one day. Seems to be quite vigorous (went from band to gallon in October, outgrew the gallon and is now in the ground, rapidly increasing in size). In only 5 US gardens, including mine (and Eurodesert which is no more) on HMF. Vintage is the only US source, but they are out of stock.

Julia Mannering. Seems to be a lovely light pink eglantine. Fragrant foliage! Mine is about to bloom. In a 1 gallon pot in one of my pot ghetto's awaiting an open spot in the yard. In only 5 HMF gardens in the US, including mine. Vintage is the only US source. In stock as of earlier today!!!

Micrugosa alba. A cross of 2 species I like a lot and which thrive in my garden--R. roxburghii and R. rugosa. One can't have too many white roses in the garden..... The plant is very robust in my garden and shows very beautiful and healthy foliage. Link below is to a picture I took of it last night.;) The first buds are intriguing with all the roxburghii-like prickles. Vintage is again the only US source, and sadly I am the only US garden listing it on HMF. In stock as of earlier today!!!

Princess Marie is a very beautiful old rambler from France and noted tree eater.....I have faith that she will take on an immense ash tree in my backyard. I keep in mind a mental image of this rose blanketing a huge swath of territory in her masses of pink flowers in a garden in England. Never have been able to forget that picture! This is the first time I've noticed her available from Vintage. Available from Vintage and 1 other nursery (but whether in stock regularly I don't know). In my garden and only 2 others in the US per HMF. Went from band to gallon in October and rapidly outgrew that and into a 3 gallon pot (not for long by evidence of vigor I'm seeing). If you want a rose mountain this is the plant for you! In stock as of earlier today.

Francois Foucard is a bit of a mystery according to Vintage's own website. Apparently he came from the Huntington as the rambler Primevere but that id doesn't appear correct as he reblooms. That confusion was one reason Vintage hadn't offered this rose until recently. I don't recall seeing FF or Primevere at the Huntington but I do remember seeing one with a similar description that I've long covetted (and available nowhere in the US), Renee Danielle, gracefully draped over one of the pergolas, blooming away with charming yellow flowers. We'll see what I have--how fun! Currently residing in a pot ghetto, 1 gallon pot. FF is listed as being in 3 US gardens (1 for Renee Danielle) besides mine. Again, Vintage is the only US source. In stock as of earlier today.

Alba Odorata. A similar species cross to Mermaid but this time in a white rose packed with petals. Supposed to be very fragrant. Apparently a great survivor in cemeteries throughout California. Mine looks innocuous enough in a 1 gallon pot, but I've been warned (thanks Jeri!) that her canes are weaponised. I got her to be a near neighbor to a new plant of Mermaid that I have. In that spot she can't get too big or be too menacing.;) Go Alba Odorata! Vintage is listed as the only current US source on HMF. In 9 US gardens per HMF other than mine, with one being the now-closed Eurodesert. In stock at Vintage as of earlier today. Not for those unwilling to wear protective gear in the garden!

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I placed my last order this morning, after having placed my "last" order the night before last. I took another walk around the garden this morning and listed all the possible (although small) spots where I could fit in another rose and proceeded to order Mlle. de Sombreuil, Rhodologue Jules Gravereaux (may have to take out another rose to make room for this one), Pink Rosette and Heirloom.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I still have some of the French imports on order, but I added some others even though my garden is completely full. I am limiting myself to what I can't get elsewhere. That said, my added list is the occasionally recurrent centifolia Lippoldsburg, gallica Nouvelle Pivoine, grandiflora San Antonio, and hybrid teas Chief Seattle, Dickson's Red, and Miss Canada. Like others have said, I, too, am very unhappy over this situation with Vintage Gardens. Greg is a really cool guy, and this turn of events should not be happening. I'm just glad and thankful that I had the opportunity to meet him when I did. The El Cerrito Celebration of Old Roses will not be the same without him there.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I hadn't planned to buy any roses for awhile (ha!) but have been motivated to put an order in to Vintage since they closing soon. I am planning to tear out some front yard this fall and I'm actually planning the roses I will put in (I usually don't plan my garden much). For some reason, I've started to like orangish roses. Never thought I would, as I have mostly old roses in pinks, soft reds, etc.

After the posts about mid-century floribundas, I've realized some of these will fit into my new orangish rose bed. So, I've ordered:
Orangeade (heard lots of good things about this rose)
Anna Wheatcroft (love the pictures!)
Golden Slippers
Lichterioh
Paprika
Fragrant Cloud VID (had a grafted version that I foolishly took out a couple years ago. Love this rose!

These will all be held for delivery in the fall as it is too late to baby them before it gets hot here. I have already planted a Blood Orange citrus tree to provide some shade for this bed.

Tastes do change and evolve with roses, it is great!

Here is my confirmed order so far. I have made another addition and hope I was in time to get my choices. Already have an order coming that was made in the fall so will have roses to remember Vintage by. So many of the ones I have wanted and waited for a long time wont be available but thats life. I have ordered from Vintage for years and it will be a sad day when I wont be able to look forward to the newest releases and being able to peruse their website. Just really sad about this.....as I know everyone is. Hope you all get your choices.

Duchesse d’Angoulême
“Ferndale Red China

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I have 4 of the French imports on order, all tea-noisettes. Vintage has informed me that one of them didn't make it. I haven't looked it up to see which one because it turns out I only have space for three on the fence after all. I can get another rose as a replacement but I think I'll go for something smaller than a TN. I was thinking of Vintage's clone Marie Pavie (I have 2 of Chamblee's) but I thought about it too long. They have now sold out and it is only available custom-rooted.

I just ordered two easy roses as a housewarming gift for a non-gardener with a new house, Little White Pet and Lullaby. They are to be sent in May.

I have Windsor Tea on order already. I just need to pick it up at the next Dirt Day.

While I'm sure I will add a rose here and there as replacements, really I think I have all the roses I need. That's partly why I have been planting trees and native shrubs outside the fence. If I ever move and start a new garden somewhere else I will be in a lot of trouble without Vintage's nusrsery, though.

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I had hoped to wait to post here until at least one of the two orders I placed with Vintage following their anouncement had been confirmed, but instead I'll go ahead and post what I already had arriving from them before I got the anouncement. From a custom root order from last spring, I had three roses confirmed as arriving this spring--the centrifolia Rose de Meaux, the alba Sappho , and the moss Mme. Platz. Unfortunately, one of my custom root roses that arrived last fall was too small and had too little time to grow before the cold, and did not survive the winter even potted in my garage, so now I will never have Portadown Fragrance. Already ordered and confirmed this spring before the anouncement were the species hybrids St Johns Rose and Rose d'Amour, the hybrid china Hippolyte, the hybrid perpetual Clio, the hybrid musk Maid Marion, the polyantha Lady Anne Kidwell, the large flowered climber Cupid, and the English rose Graham Thomas. (evidentally they propagate Graham Thomas such that it is more free-flowering). As soon as my orders of last week are confirmed I'll post them as well, and due to my addictive personality I will likely order at least once more soon, and then again the last week of June from whatever if anything remains by then. I also have a few custom root orders placed last spring that have yet to be confirmed as succesful--five roses altogether I believe. With any luck at least some of them will also be succesful.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

Just received confirmation on the first of my orders since the announcement. I'm going to get all but one of my first choices for this order. Here's whats coming:
Duchesse d’Angoulême-Hybrid China
Elegant Gallica-Gallica
Dominie Sampston- Spinosissima
Gay Princess-HT
Gregg Lowery-Hybrid Bourbon
Helen Hayes-HT
Thusnelda-Shrub, Hyb. Rugosa
Gloire de Guilan-Damask

That last was my substitute, they were out of the Cinnamon Rose.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

Ugh, this forum is evil -- hahaha. I went and added four more. I already have more coming than I can fit here.

Three were roses which grabbed my eye anyway ( the Chinas 'Archduc Charles', 'Mme. Laurette Messimy' and 'Napolean') because they are touted as being rather fragrant for Chinas. I wanted to try my hand at rose breeding and wanted some fragrant Chinas for potential parents, so now I have a few more. I don't know yet if they'll be planted or remain as "pot-pets."

The fourth was Vintage Gardens' version of the Rambler 'Baltimore Belle' because it supposedly repeats (and isn't available elsewhere). I'm almost certainly not planting that here, but I have another friend with a huge yard who's been asking me to share "excess" roses, or have me grow cuttings of what I keep. He has the space for a rambler to grow into a tree, and so that is where 'Baltimore Belle' will likely live.

I know the Chinas I added are available elsewhere, but I figured that I'd lighten their inventory somewhat of roses which might not get snatched up and give them some additional sales.

So now I'll have 32 coming from Vintage Gardens, bringing my total order for this year to 64. Add the 6 on my porch, and that means 70 roses.

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I have had NO acknowledgement of my first e-mailed order on March 6. Had to e-email because the site crashed repeatedly when I'd try to do the order.

An on-site order Mar. 10 , when the site was working well for me was acknowledged with an e-mail within 48 hrs. Don't know if my first order is "official" or not. Oh well.

Had Napoleon on order--had him a long time ago & it is a fragrant, full-bloomed China. Mme. Antoine Mari is a modest sized heavy blooming tea for this area--an easy keeper, very happy plant. And Madame Laurette Messime is one of my favorites--she's almost always in bloom--fragrant fluffy little flowers on a healthy plant.

I get the giggles reading these posts--imagining folks here getting boxes & boxes of roses & potting up SCORES of plants. Maybe everyone better order a load of potting soil & a crate of pots, too! ( I'm having mixed feelings about whether my first order went through or not, LOL)

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

Bluegirl, you read my mind. Right after placing that last order for four more from Vintage, I said to myself "ok, THAT'S IT!!! Now I need pots and stuff" so I placed my order with Greenhouse Megastore.

I still have 20 empty 2gal nursery liners, but after reading this forum, I decided to get 30 new 1gal liners along with 20 more 2gal liners. It's more than I need for the 64 coming, but I figured 1) they're cheap -- 50 pots for $28 before shipping, and 2) I can use the smaller containers for the smallest bands and the next size up for the more vigorous bands, leaving myself some wiggle room. Whatever doesn't go in the ground by Autumn will be transferred to the 2gal liners (if they're not in them already) to wait until next Spring.

I was considering ordering the ProMix from them until I realized it'd be ridiculously expensive to ship, so I'll be taking a trip to Home Depot soon to make my own recipe again.

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

So what is your recipe? I had been potting up in Lowe's Hapigrow ($2.49 per sack, sandy/fluffy cheap mix). But after gorging on Vintage orders thought I might do some mix-my-own.

I used to get 10-15 gallon pots from Mortons in TN. They had very good prices. I have a wonderful haul of 1-5 gallons from a local nursery that went belly-up--my best investment in years :)

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I can't remember the ratio for sure, but I think my first mix was 2 parts peat moss, 2 parts Peters' topsoil, 1 part composted cow manure, 1 part cedar mulch, mixed together in a wheelbarrow. I used this for Gallicas and Albas in 5gallon pots for a block garden in Buffalo, with some Rosetone and Epsom salts mixed into each pot.

The second time I nixed the cedar mulch, and increased the peat moss. I'm sure there are better homemade mixes out there, but this worked for me -- the bands put on a lot of growth. It's probably too heavy to use long-term, but worked fine for my needs.

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

Very sad news. I haven't placed an order in a long time, wish I had done it sooner, to help them stay in business.

I have lots of room but no prepared beds, so any plants I am lucky to get will have to wait for their permanent homes until next year. I would have liked the opportunty to give perhaps 1 obscure, high-risk rose a home, but got overwhelmed and I think most of my choices are available commercially.

My order of 3/10 is not confirmed, but I am hopeful for:

Ferndale Red China
Gilbert Nabonnand
Baronne Henriette de Snoy
Salet
Marchesa Boccella
Le Vésuve
Baronne Prévost
Hermosa
Serratipetala
Mrs. Dudley Cross
Rhodologue Jules Gravereaux
Spice
Alternates, but I want these too!

Gloire Lyonnaise
Le Pactole
Pink Rosette
Alister Stella Gray

" haven't placed an order in a long time, wish I had done it sooner, to help them stay in business."

Herein lies an important message, and one that could be applied to the industry as a whole: If you want it to be there for you tomorrow, you better invest in it today.

This is so very true.

I just got my order confirmation from Vintage and am elated that only one of the roses I ordered won't come home (Général Kléber)...is anyone with the General reading and willing to send a newbie a cutting?

I'll be getting...

Bérénice
Cumberland Belle
Van Artevelde
Ville de Toulouse
Violacée

Considering adding Salet, Zoé, or Thusnelda...

Cheers!

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

So, third and last post on this subject until I get a couple more paychecks I think--my last order of 8 was just confirmed, and miracles, I got all my first choices. They were:
HTs-Lucky Piece, Summer Rainbow
Florabundas-Spartan VID, Lilac Dawn
Hyb. China-"The Bishop"
Hyb. Perp.-"General Allard"
Rambler-Flora
Gallica-"Jenny Duval"

Thats it for awhile, even though I actually have what would be my next 8 picked out, I'll try to hold off the next order until closer to the end of June to give others a chance to help.

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I'm broke and out of space but I will be making room for the following:

1. BOULE DE NEIGE -- I've been lusting after this pure snowy white Bourbon for years and now is my last chance. His sister Coquette des Blanches is an excellent rose so I have high hopes for this beauty.

2. CASINO -- among my dwindling list of favorite vendors (Antique Rose Emporium, Chamblees & Heirloom) Vintage is the only one who is offering this fragrant Large Flowered yellow climber. He is replacing one of my Pilgrim's that got choked out by Belladonna last year.

3. ORFEO -- only Vintage and Rogue Valley Roses carry this dark red Large Flowered Climber that does particularly well in the Mid-Atlantic region.

4. SPARTAN -- nobody has this reddish orange VID Floribunda but Vintage. I figured I'd better snatch him up before it is too late.

All these roses have strong fragrances. Others that I missed out on are Apricot Nectar VID, Lullaby, Osiria, Rosemary Rose, and Yolande d'Aragon. All these are hard to find but I'm particularly distraught over Osiria. Nobody has it but Vintage.

Here is a link that might be useful: Osiria at HelpMeFind Roses

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

It's truly heartwarming to see how many of you are putting in orders to Vintage, and in these difficult economic times it can't always be easy, but I'm sure financially and psychologically this has to be such an uplifting experience for Gregg and Gita to have the orders pouring in.

Molineux, I think you'll enjoy Casino, which does have very lovely and large flowers. Just keep in mind that it has the more stiff and heavy-caned habit of a modern climber. It's a very good rose that has never become as popular as it deserves to be.

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

Got an e-mail confirmation w/ shipping date for my first, e-mailed order yesterday. Really looking forward to those mosses & old HTs & floribundas. Can't wait to see the blooms of Smoky & Halloween.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions. Maybe next year I can post availability of some cuttings.

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I ordered the Lens HMs 'Vivaldi' and 'Matchball'.' I believe Tammy in TN also ordered Vivaldi. I'm looking forward to these making a trio with my existing 'Ballerina.' Also ordered 'Mons. Tillier'. After hearing so much about it, I have to give it a shot. To fill out the box, 'Madame Pierre S. DuPont,' an old yellow HT. Why? I have no idea besides I love yellow rose.

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I made my last order in December, but this thread is pulling me back to the website. My heart aches to think they are going. I've moved again, from here in Idaho to Portland in 2004, and back to Idaho two summers ago. Pretty limited budget these days, but there's a lot of Vintage roses spread out over the three gardens. If they are still available, I sing the praises of Le Pactole and Phil Edinger's noisette for those in appropriate climates.

For zone 5 -

“Sappho”
Mme. Hardy
Quatre Saisons Blanc Mousseaux
Cardinal de Richelieu
“Long John Silver”
Hippolyte
Pergolèse
Pompon Blanc Parfait

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I got all but one on my list so don't be afraid to make your order.

 o
RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

I haven't received a confirmation yet, but asked for
Dainty Bess
Geisha
Malmaison
Coronado
with several back ups

I just don't have much room. My "rose ghetto" already has a bunch of Vintage and Garden Valley Ranch roses I haven't planted into the landscape yet. I think my DH would've fainted if the order was bigger. I could easily find another dozen or more.

I'll really miss Vintage; it's been my "go to" place for years.

I need to learn how to slip roses so I can trade. People have asked me for slips of my Just Joey.

This was my third "last" order! With a couple exceptions, I'm really only ordering ones that don't seem to be offered elsewhere and really appeal to me. I have really good luck with Gene Boerner's roses, so I picked up a couple of his lesser known ones, even though HMF doesn't have pics. I also adore ramblers and they have a great selection of ones that you can't find anywhere else. Next year I'm going to have to cut back A LOT!

However, I've noticed that Rogue Valley has listed some new additions to their website recently that only Vintage Gardens had offered previously. So maybe they're trying to pick up some of the varieties they feel are too good to go out of commerce.

Here's my last order which was placed Tuesday. Just waiting on final confirmation. I asked for a late June ship date in case I want to add 1 or 2, that way I won't have the need to place another large order.

RE: So, what's your *sob* last Vintage order?

Just got a shipment of my four from VG-Ferndale Red China, Duchesse de Brabant, Baronne Henriette Snoy and Arethusa. I'm considering a few other smaller ones. Your lists are enabling me.

I was glad to see that someone ordered Sainte Exupery. I may order another one in case of a tragedy. I never recommend it because it ranks so low in the ARS handbook. Maybe it does poorly in other climates. It grows well for me with morning sun and the blooms are beautiful and fragrant. The color is bluer than Angel Face. I don't agree that it blows fast. It's a little slow growing but it's healthy and repeats pretty well.
