Hi. It's me again. I'm awfully chatty lately! I have an arch at the entry to my garden. It doesn't get sun until Noonish but then will get it all day (late sun a bit filtered). The soil is dry there so I believe a rose will do fine. I'm wondering...Noisette? HM? I have Celine and Bouquet d'Or coming on fortuniana... Thoughts? Susan

| Under the conditions you describe, I don't think your rose options are too limited. During the main rose growing season, getting all day sun from noon onward is at least 6-8 hours of sun, and that's enough for most roses even if some of it is filtered. If you find the sun is more limited than you thought, my hybrid musks have all bloomed very well in filtered shade all day under limbed up pine trees. Being in a colder zone where Noisettes and anything on fort doesn't survive, I won't presume to advise you there, but I'm suspecting that your ordered roses you list would be happy under these conditions. | Crepuscle--if it's a good-sized arch or otherwise has lots of room. Mine gets only 4 hours of real sun and blooms like crazy. |

That is GREAT to know re: Crepuscule and the HMs. I just love Crepuscule. Also Sophie's Perpetual is a great rose too. I guess I'm more concerned about them frying then getting enough sun...I just know how pitiful some can look when they are in a hot spot. Would Sombreuil (CL) do well in a similar situation on a trellis? Still a baby but have read that she is thorny and stiff... Thanks. Susan

I have Sophie's Perpetual in afternoon sun, and I don't recommend it for that exposure. It's pretty and smells nice, but it's one of those flowers that darkens in the sun. On mine, flowers that open in the morning are dried up, crispy black wads by the end of the same day. You're a couple of zones cooler/more northerly than I am. That might make a difference, but I'm not sure. Maybe others will chime in.

I'm in Roanoke, so more-or-less same climate, soil, temps... I have Sombrueil and Cl Mamam Cochet on an arch in all-day sun. Sombrueil struggles--doesn't die, doesn't grow, blooms are nice but few. Mamam as does very well even tho for the past 3 years she has been fighting off RRD or herbicide damage here and there. I cut out the damage and she grows, then grows a bit more damage, which I cut out, and so on. The good growth far outweighs the snippets of problem. So I would highly recommend of her over Sombrueil, tho perhaps I just had a lemon from the beginning. Also, Sombrueil. does have mean thorns.
