As a climber: Jude the Obscure or Lady of Shalott?

| For any of you who have experience with either or both of these roses as climbers, please help me decide between them! I have a sunny spot against the house where I would like to grow a climber up a trellis. It gets great morning sun, a little (filtered) afternoon sun. North facing. What can you tell me about: *Growth habit *Scent *Color (I hear complaints about JtO fading quickly) In addition, which rose is the "pickier" of the two, in terms of care and environment. The rose will be sharing a bed with a lovely hydrangea, but it gets good drainage. I want it to be the "backsplash" showpiece growing up the side and east corner of the house, but it will have the hydrangea bush competing with it on the lower end. Thanks! |

| I adore Lady of Shalott (as a bush), so normally would say go with her--she's wonderful! But 8 ft tall isn't much of a climber, especially if that is the maximum, which means it more often will be 6 ft tall? That said, I know nothing about either one as climbers--but I did just yesterday run across a great climber offered by Chamblees--and now I'm looking around wondering where I could put in another climber (I'm out of space--help!). Anyway, it is called Lady Ashe. She is part of the Biltmore rose garden collection--about 10-12 ft tall, large flowered (look at how she is packed with petal-power), very fragrant, very disease-resistant, etc. What is there not to love? If only I had an open spot somewhere in my yard! I'd plant it immediately. Kate |

Wow! Lady Ashe is gorgeous! The shape of those blooms is to die for. Thanks! However, now my decision just got harder! Maybe I need Lady Ashe for the climbing spot and a new spot for a Lady of Shalott. |

| 'Lady Ashe' is the more subdued color sport of the fine Gene Boerner short climber 'Aloha' (1949). Incidentally, 'Aloha' is the seed parent of the Austin rose 'Abraham Darby'. |

| I've grown Jude for eight years now, and he can get huge (like 10 feet tall), but I don't think he's a climber. He has very stiff canes and definitely needs no support, but would make a fine backdrop if you have the room. I find him very easy to grow with a lovely scent. Most of the time Jude is a light apricotish cream color, but I agree that when the sun is really blazing his blooms fade a lot, and in rain may ball. Diane |

| Nanadoll, that Jude picture is stunning. The David Austin catalog suggested that JtO could be grown as a climber, but a very tall upright would work just as well in my spot. I'm just looking for a good, tall backdrop rose. I'm wondering if the bleaching would be limited because it's a well-protected spot with only morning sun, really. Maybe I'll have to snap a picture of the spot to post here... hoovb, incidentally, I am growing Abraham Darby a few feet away from the spot in question! A gorgeous rose. |

| Hi again, I don't know what happened to my second pic, but I'll try again. Ddiane |

| Jude is to the right of Brother Cadfael. Now, please bear with me, and I'll try the pic that didn't go through a minute ago. Diane |

| Oh my goodness, I'm in trouble. Ten feet? Can Jude the Obscure be espaliered with her stiff canes? Somebody please say yes. It's my only hope. Sherry |

If you are considering a bush rather than a climber, I'd strongly recommend Lady of Shalott. Mine is still very young--here's a pic of one of her first season blooms. I think it is much more gorgeous than the David Austin pic indicates:
Since mine is young, I can't say how tall the bush will get, but DA lists 4 x 3 ft as a bush. I can tell you its canes are quite flexible--it has a graceful arching fountain shape. And although the flower may slightly fade in the hot sun, it still retains its basic color, but just a slightly lighter shade--it doesn't bleach out like some roses do. Oh, what the heck--all the recommended roses are terrific--I think you should get them all! You wanted another bed out in back anyway, didn't you? Of course you did! Kate |

Everyone's pictures are so stunning! My husband will curse you all, but I think my spring rose order just got bigger! I'm now thinking of JtO for the spot I originally posted about, but Lady of Shalott in a new spot. Kate, you photo is dreamy...and you are right, I was looking for an excuse for a new bed, anyway! (Aren't we all?) Maybe the Lady Ashe can go in the backyard... Here is a photo of the spot I'm thinking about putting the Jude. Like I said, north-facing, but with lots of eastern sun. We moved into this house last year and have been systematically tearing out the horrible landscaping put in by the previous owners. It's exciting to be starting from scratch in most places of the yard, but intimidating too! Last year I got Abraham Darby, Claire, Mr. Lincoln, and Westland plants in. This year, it's looking like Jude the Obscure, Lady of Shalott, Lady Ashe, The Shepherdess (one of my all-time favorites!), and Crowned Princess Margareta! I'm thinking that based on nanadoll's pictures the JtO will fill out the space I've got in this picture...Does anyone think I need more than one here? |

| I think Jude will fill out the area very well, and you shouldn't need another rose in this spot. My Jude has an Eastern exposure with a wall in back, so your setup is fairly similar. I would expect your window to be covered by rose, though. Being next door in Utah with the same cold hardiness zone as here, and I'll bet, hot, dry summers (am I wrong?), you should have great results with Jude. He should grow straight up with no need for any support. Boy, I hope this advice doesn't backfire. Good luck with your new roses. I love this little bit of your house in the pic. Remember to post more pics as things progress. Diane |

| Thanks, Diane! Luckily, that window only looks into a very boring garage and is partially obscured from the inside by shelves and such...It is, frankly, a dumb window! So covering it is not a problem for me. Yes, hot dry summers here, too! I will post pics as things progress. I ordered the rose this morning, yay! |

| just have to say... Jude is SO gorgeously fragrant, and the color and shape of the blooms in person is wonderful |
