Other Places to see roses in Sacramento

Hi - it sees that there are several newer people posting here that live in the Sacramento area, and who are open to growing all kinds of roses including Austins and HTs. You won't see them in the historic rose garden where I spend my time, but there are several other good places to see roses in this town -

First of all, there are about 20 shrub roses in the Hamilton Square perennial plant garden in the cemetery. A few are Austins, and there are other incredibly lovely things like Lyda Rose, Happenstance (scary thorny big), Old Port, etc.

Then, there is the World Peace Garden in the Capitol Park. All moderns, I believe.

The McKinley Park Rose Garden has been recently refurbished. It's all modern, too, in a very nice setting with palm trees.

Lastly, Natomas Rose Garden was planted about seven years ago, and it's got both moderns and some old roses. Weeks roses contributed quite a bit to the garden, and so did Vintage. They insisted on planting all of the roses without regard to their growth habits, so they have to whack the big ones too much, but it's a nice spot and another place to look at how they grow here.

It's amazing that all of these gardens are supported with volunteer efforts. Sacramento is a gardening town.

All of the roses are labelled in these gardens, I believe, with the exception of Hamilton Square. The key volunteer is usually there working and can identify them for you.

Our historic rose garden roses are labeled, too, and there is a collection catalog on our website. So you can do some homework before you come, or look at the listing while there. Or, you can talk to me. I'm usually there Tues and Sat mornings.

RE: Other Places to see roses in Sacramento

Thanks for that info. A group of us visited the cemetery garden last year and then on to the peace garden but didn't know about the others. My purchases at the cemetery garden are what launched me into starting to grow OGR's. Mary

RE: Other Places to see roses in Sacramento

Thank you for this info Anita! It seems that Sacramento loves roses! AND that I have some great places to visit.

In the summer, I might seek you out. I'll introduce myself as the girl on the internet who's been asking so many rose questions! ;)

The help is very much appreciated though... <3
