Vintage's last sale

Do we know anything about this last sale, other than it's supposed to be happening in March? I can't seem to find anything other than their website post. With my luck with Vintage sales, I'm trying my best to stay on top of this one!

The only information available is the following as posted by Gregg on the Vintage website: " . . . One final release of roses will occur in March, a listing of rare roses, many never offered in commerce in the USA, and many rarities that we have propagated in a final effort to preserve them in your hands. Please look for an email we will send out in mid-March for this listing . . . ".

    Mid-March isn't quite here yet. Patience . . .

Vintage has stocked a few new roses. I know because I got an email this morning that my VG product had been stocked. I ordered White Spray, Spartan VID, Pinocchio VID, and an interesting HM called Inspector Blom, from Kordes at midcentury.

Of those, Spartan and Pinocchio are known to be possible in zone 5 (5 turning into 6), and Kordes roses so far have done very well for me here. White Spray is, shall we say, iffy. I am a sucker for the LeGrice brand, along with the Tantau brand, because of attention of those breeders to color.

There some new floribundas and HTs newly restocked.

Nastarana - Pinocchio is an absolute trooper in zone 5 and can take anything you throw at it. Spartan has also survived well for me in two different spots, but I don't think it's cane hardy. White Spray didn't overwinter for me, but I only tried it once. Le Grice roses tend to be on the wimpy side for hardiness, so I'd give it a protected spot.

I ordered 10 (more) roses from Vintage, finally snagging Oldtimer that I've ordered 3 times from Vintage but it had crop failure each time. I got beat once again on Camille Pisarro and Tea Time, though - drat!

When the Anne Belovich ramblers go on sale this will be an incredible opportunity. These are very rare roses. Mostly they are only in Anne's and my garden in the US.

Thanks everyone! Jackie forwarded the email to me and I got one as well.

I went for Hubner Plot Tea (T), Thisbe (HyMusk), and Royal Sunset (ClHT).

I am just crossing my fingers that I actually get them. I've had atrocious luck with Vintage sales so far.

    Nastarana,

Agreed. It looks like it'll be a close call for any of our choices. Zaphod, I've had the same thing happen to me while I was trying to order back in July. The website decided enough was enough and it never processed my order. Good thinking on the email order!

If they can't fill most of my order, do y'all know if they'd be willing to put the money towards a future order?

I ordered just two -- 'Crimson Glory' and 'Mr. Lincoln'. I was going to order them elsewhere for less money, anyway, but I figured that it was worth it to nab them as VID plants. I noticed there was just one of each available. I guess I'll find out tomorrow if I got them. And I'll keep an eye open for any others I didn't find last year when the next releases come out.

There are some lovely roses on the list. Had I not just discarded 42 roses I might be buying, but under the present situation, I will let them pass me by.

However, I must admit that I felt the temptation. To anyone who has room and inclination: Go for it!

I don't know if all the ramblers that I have planted from Anne will be on the list. There are very interesting things like Babier Ramblers that haven't been available, some old American ramblers that went to Europe and disappeared here, ramblers from eastern Europe.

Yes. The Anne Belovich rambler list will be released in mid-March, another group of roses late March, and perhaps more in April and May.

New email from VG this morning. I expanded my order to add Francois Arago and Paul's Single White Perpetual. I lost out on FA last fall so am really hoping that the East Coast time advantage works for me this time around.

I do hope the more coming, if they do come, will include some albas and Portlands!

Hmm. I suppose with such low numbers of plants they simply had to release them and then led the crowds scramble, but I really hope that when they do their final sale they will give us a day or two for a notice.

    AviaStar,

I would check with Angel Gardens for a ASG.

I have been impatiently waiting too........just got word from Vintage that Gregg is going to have to send out the confirmations of those who got roses on Sunday.......I will have to wait, but apparently I got something! So no news is apparently good news. Will be a long wait.......but just delighted to get something. Josh, if I get something you want [or if I have something you want], I will be glad to share cuttings. I don't have Huber Plot Tea and don't know anything about it, but I love tea roses and am sure its a nice one. Good luck to everyone! As many people that are buying.....wish they would just change their minds and stay in business - just one more year!!!

    I just received two emails.

The first said the four I had requested had been set aside for me.

The second said I would receive confirmation Sunday. I hope that refers to the two HPs I requested later.

I am really looking forward to growing Spartan and Pinocchio. I had despaired of ever finding Spartan again.

    Folly,

I am envious of you! If I ever make it out to California I'll find a way to see Vintage.

On the flip side of the things, I used the money from the Vintage order to fuel my newfound interest in unusual trees and shrubs. I ordered two Edgeworthia Chrysantha that should be here in April. It blooms in the winter so I figured it would help offset the lack of roses.

excellent idea, Josh. There is more to life than roses (hard though that may be to believe) and diversity is a fundamental aspect of garden health.
Cannot manage this lovely daphne relative in my cold alkaline garden....but if you can provide the holy grail of garden soil - moist but well drained peaty loam, and the temps don't dip under -5C, it is a beautiful early spring shrub. Grow hellebores underneath.

I missed out on the two I picked ('Crimson Glory' and 'Mr. Lincoln), but no biggie. I can get them elsewhere, though it would have been nice to get them as VID from Vintage. There were only a couple others I had in mind last year but couldn't find, so if they come up later, that'll be what I pick. Oh, well....at least it's good to know they're clearing their inventory!

    Camp,

I'll probably put it in a raised island bed edged in large stones, and hand make the soil to its liking. I was actually looking into Hellesbores to put underneath it! What color do you think would look good with it? I was leaning towards a crimson...

Josh, a couple of years ago, Mr Camps made a 70 mile trip to buy me a single hellebore plant (yes, I know 70 miles is nothing in the US but in the UK, we are almost packing our toothbrush and pyjamas).....a glorious primrose yellow. Along with the white, faintly freckled orientalis.....would, I think, look glorious under an edgeworthia. The crimson Red Lady would look spectacular but the deep atrorubens are gorgeous for close-up viewing....but tend to vanish in the hurly burly of the garden.

I misplaced the last email from Vintage Gardens. When was the final release of roses supposed to be? The website states an email of the roses to be released in their final release will occur in mid March. I just am hoping I have a day or two to plan on what to get from that list. I remember the last email from Vintage said some rare rambler roses were going to be released at some point this month.

I bought these four: I'm not that familiar with roses and couldn't tell you what they look like by name so I picked based on the names not knowing much about the rose. I figured crimson glory was red, American heritage sounded good and patriotic, Texas centennial, we are in Texas this year, and spiced coffee is always good. Lol

    HTCrimson Glory
    HTAmerican Heritage
    HT Texas Centennial
    Ht Spiced Coffee

And all 10 Ferdy for a hedge. Although I'm not sure where the hedge will go yet. LOL!!! If you look at pics of Ferdy hedges online they are stunning.

New_Garden -- ah-HAH! So you're the one who beat me to 'Crimson Glory'! Well, congrats, and hope you will enjoy that one. I got one band last year from Vintage but it was "nibbled to death" by a squirrel. I planned to replace it eventually, and tried to nab another from Vintage, but lost out. It's for the best, however, as I already have so many companion perennials to plant this year that the last thing I need is another "rose in a pot." So I'll nab mine elsewhere, maybe next year.

  • AquaEyes 7a NJ

It will, so long as it isn't grafted/budded onto an infected rose. If planted in the garden, about the only way it could become infected with the common forms of mosaic is if you planted it VERY close to an infected rose, and their roots grow together enough to form natural grafts below the ground.
