| Sorry for what probably is a silly question... but how do you prune SDLM?
I am growing it in a large 25 gallon pot, permanently, on a concrete patio. It's been here about a year and bloomed non stop all the way from last Spring to November... and even this winter it stayed covered with leaves and fat little buds (most of which were balled in the wet weather, though.) It's a real workhorse rose, and I could swear I saw somewhere online that this is a rose that doesn't really need pruning. But I haven't been able to find that reference, and I don't really understand what pruning "rules" to follow for this rose. In particular, my issue is that one side of the plant is starting to look a little gangly... a couple of the canes which were heavy with flowers last year grew a little sprawl-y, they're kind of draping over and flopping down over the edge of the pot rather than the others that are growing strong and up. I'm tempted to cut them out to encourage a different shape and keep the shape more upright. So can you prune SDLM for shape? Do I just cut it back to where I want it, or do I have to take out a whole cane? Should I be doing seasonal pruning on her? (If so, when... it seems like this rose has yet to go "dormant" in my yard.) Thanks!

| If the rose has plenty of canes I don't know if it would matter whether you cut the rogue canes out or just shortened them considerably, beyond the point where they begin to go downwards. I've only pruned mine gently to shape it as desired but if I had your problem I would prune those canes back and then fertilize with alfalfa meal, make sure it has plenty of water and keep it mulched. Hopefully some Bourbon experts will have more advice for you. Ingrid |

| I would try some plant supports(peony rings or small poles) rather than cutting any canes. I've only removed dead wood from mine. |

| With roses of this group, I cut back winter damage, if any, and trim canes back when they sprawl into the path. Sometimes it produces multiple growth buds from a single node. If a bud is aiming in an inappropriate direction, you can just pick it off. My impression is that these roses don't need much renewal pruning. I did take a couple of the oldest canes from 'Kronprinzessin Viktoria' this year. Dangling canes on potted roses can make them more attractive, IMO, but the plant won't mind if you cut them back. You might get some weirdly angling shoots, but foliage of SDLM is so dense, the architecture doesn't show. |
