or should I plant it bang in almost full day sun? Strong med sun here in the summer. Also is it a very thirsty rose or is it somewhat draught tolerant?

Nik, yes, even here in cooler, cloudier Portland, OR, mine has been thriving in partial shade for 10 years. It blooms constantly and with abandon and I have to prune the bush by almost half each spring to keep it in check. Carol

In Sacramento, which has a hot dry Mediterranean climate, it thrives in full sun. It's been found throughout the California foothills in areas with little or no summer water, so I think it's fairly drought tolerant.

Thank you to both of you for the info. My plant is still in a pot and I will be moving it to the ground end of the month if it looks robust enough.

Mine also gets shade, mostly afternoon, and does fine. I planted mine as a band and was in a hurry to get it in, so the hole was not well-ammended. It took its time about getting big, but it has toughed it out and is now a fine bush.
